I have lots of tiny thoughts that all seem too trivial for their own post. So, I’ll try a compendium and see if that helps.

· I wonder how so many people, mostly younger women, come here and post about “love will conquer all” when they are talking about marrying someone of another faith, or another “brand” of Christianity. How can they not see how much pain and difficulty they are asking to be added to the already huge undertaking of marriage?

· I know that men are so obtuse when it comes to women. It’s painfully obvious in my own life as well as almost every other man I know. The amazing thing is most women don’t get how obtuse they are about men, too. Silly gals.

· I’m growing more and more convinced that irony is the central theme of life. Every absolute statement I have ever made seems to have come right back against me.

· The only thing I like about growing older (mid-forties here) is the noticeable addition in my level of patience. It doesn’t balance the scales, of course, but I’ll take what I can get.

· In only four months, my first grandchild will arrive. Hurrah.

· I shake my head in sorrow when I read posts about being afraid of having a large family. Friends, let me tell you, children are a horrible amount of work. They exhaust you, bankrupt you, frustrate you and even drive you to drink, but, they are also one of the few things in life that repay you much more than you put in.

· That equation works no matter how many you have. I have ten now, they all eat, none run around naked – well, the toddlers do, but that is for their own entertainment, none of them lack for shelter, medical care or education. They’re also surrounded by many, many people who love them. So, I’ll never have enough money to retire; I’ll take that trade-off.

· I’ve talked with a lot of Christian men, and when we can be honest with each other we can admit that the temptations of the flesh are so pervasive in our culture. Most Christian men I speak with, when we can talk openly, have to struggle against it. Not all, of course, we each have our particular burdens. I’ll say straight out, though, when my wife and I have frequent relations, my temptations are both reduced and easier to resist. It’s not her job to serve as my “temptation reducer” but it is a side-effect. On the flip side, since we’re no longer all that regular, I’m having to fight daily, hourly even.

· There’s a line I heard, and I cling to it almost like Scripture. I hope and pray that it has some modicum of truth in it: Sometimes we just stop wanting the same things, but we stay together. Then, when we come out the other side, we fall in love all over again.

· In 2009 I hope that we can convert all three of our foster girls into adopted girls.

Hi Ghost,
Random replies here from a young female:

Some of us know that most women are clueless about men; it doesn’t stop men from being stubborn and absurd.

That’s interesting about liking a large family: have you actually GROWN UP in one of them? I’m curious.

So intriguing is your post about men’s sex drives. I fully understand that they are out of control because I LIVE WITH a man who consistently and predictably makes smutty comments to his female family members…I don’t know if I’ll ever get over the charm of this.

Anyway, that is all. Not that I would ever wish to be vituperative - not me. This is the other side from a female perspective.

First grandchild…so most of your children aren’t that old…and you’re only in your mid-forties. It gets harder. Wait till more are independent and start getting creative with their lives!!!
I love my sons, but sometimes in the sheer agony of all the issues that arise and things that happen, I have to forgive again the priest who talked me out of being a Carmelite nun (and he then afterwards left the Church anyway)! Your children may give you the greatest joy but they also give you the worst pain of your life, especially in the consequences that follow their choices. When they’re older a parent is more helpless. You can give as much as you can, but it’s never enough to really help.

You love them and pray for them, and suffer in silence for them.

I grew up in a large family of nine surviving children. Our mother died leaving nine children from age nineteen to four years old.

Love doesn’t conquer all. Love only helps you to keep making the choices to do what you can and to give what you can, even when life is a choice you make because others need your love, your help, and your prayer.

That’s not irony. It’s a frequent result of pride. I speak from experience!

The only things I make absolute statements about, any more, is Church dogma - and I look it up first!

God bless you, Ghostman. That was an interesting read.

P.S. All I learned about men, I got from Dave Barry’s Guide to Guys. (vulgarity warning - but the funniest book I have ever read!)

Interesting thoughts, Ghostman. Oh, don’t say “gals,” it is so 1940’s ish…Either guys/men or women/girls. No gals. lol

Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. 😊

I have always admired the fact that you and your wife have 10 kids. You both have much to be thankful for, and proud of!

Thanks for this thread. 🙂

not-so-random returns:
This is the other side from a female perspective.
not from this female. oh, and you can call me a gal. all my friends do and so do i call them. not being contrary, just saying.

ghost man, mostly good with all of it. we have 10 kids too. my oldest kids talk about having lots of responsibilites as they grew up, complain about it in their late teens, then appreciate it in their 20s. when their friends are falling apart over daily living, my oldest son and oldest daughter have a lot more confidence to manage things.

running around naked? i have a 23 year old who does that, i think…

grandchildren-- bliss.

coming up on my 30th high school reunion. i don’t have the most toys. i think i’m not winning.

sexual temptation. st paul warned about spouses hanging the other out to dry.

yep. we fell in love again. twice, at least.

happy new year.

Cute thread

Reminds me of ‘monkey brain’ when you can’t go to sleep because all these random things running thru your head. I guess getting them out and written down could be a sleep aid…

dakotagirl with all due respect, that is YOUR perspective, and you happen to be female, but it is not a generic female perspective.

I happen to be female and am very touched, and not to mention in full agreement with every word he wrote. And, he may call me gal, no problem;)

And, it gives me hope, as a single woman, that there are good men out there, with big hearts, who are gentle and kind, and not afraid to be strong, be a man and be vulnerable at the same time.

bravo Ghost Man:thumbsup: :clapping:

Thanks for the kind responses. I’m not worried about snarky replies, my New Year’s resolution was to let the bitterness that some people love to share roll off my back like water off a duck.

Don’t call me a gal though…:rotfl:

I was partly tongue in cheek with that…😉 :o

I think that everyone’s experiences lend them to their opinions. I think that we have more in common, than not…I’m a big believer of finding the common ground with people…it’s the only way to better communication.

Random whispers from whatevergirl.🙂

Because young women once they get infatuated and get into that whole hokey pokey love thing, are worse than a male on crack. Reasoning is gone.

Ah, friend, there are very few things that are legal that we haven’t tried. We’ve been married for over twenty-six years and had a wonderful, rich romantic life.

It just seems that with all her pulling away and, for lack of a better word, mid-life crisis behavior, this was something that went by the wayside for her.

Oh I am sorry. I was making a joke (did you read the shower thread? It is hilarious. It’s at Moral Theology now.) and trying to make you smile.

I’m sorry though. Hopefully the crisis will end and her desires will come back full circle.
