I just heard on EWTN that the College of Cardinals is divided up into three “ranks” being:
  1. Cardinal Bishop
  2. Cardinal Priest
  3. Cardinal Deacon
I’ve never heard of this before–I’ve heard of this before. I think I’ve heard the term Cardinal Bishop and Cardinal Priest but what is the difference? I’ve never heard the term Cardinal Deacon. What’s the difference? Is a Cardinal Bishop a Cardinal activley serving as a Bishop? What roles do these ranks play?

God Bless,

I just answered my own question…if anyone is intrested:

There are three degrees within the College of Cardinals:

Cardinal Bishops;
Cardinal Priests; and
Cardinal Deacons.
This does not correspond to their actual degree of orders (ie, whether they are a bishop, priest or deacon) but to their position within the College of Cardinals. Cardinals appointed from dioceses around the world are made Cardinal Priests. Cardinals appointed from within the Roman Curia are made Cardinal Deacons. However, after having been a Cardinal Deacon for 10 years, the Cardinal can petition the Pope to be promoted to Cardinal Priest. The distinction between the three degrees of Cardinals has little practical significance except in determining the order and rank for ceremonial processions. Also, during the period after a Pope dies and before a new one is elected, it is one’s position within the College of Cardinals that determines one’s power to exercise certain powers if the Dean of the College of Cardinals or Camerlengo are unable to do so.

They are ordained bishop priest and decons. You are not ordained a cardinal, so you can be a decon, priest or bishop, but most of them are bishops.

Remember that the cardinals are the honorary clergy of Rome. That is why they elect a new pope. It goes back to the old days when the clergy of Rome were the ones to elect the bishop of Rome. Certain signifigant positions within the cardinaliate are made cardinal bishops. The Patriarcs are also given this title. Cardinal priests are given a titual parish to pastor in Rome. Some of these cardinals actually have a hand on relationship with the parish. Cardinal deacons are the curial officials at the service of the Bishop of Rome for administration of the universal Church. At one time, their designated title would also determine what kind of decarative dress they wore.

Thanks for posting this… I also heard that on EWTN and was wondering too.

So what do you call a Cardinal who is a priest but not a bishop, like Cardinal Avery Dulles?

Another point of trivia: His Emminence is a Cardinal-Deacon.
