Oh and I forgot to add…

I mean vulgar, not like Christian rap or anything.

Rap music is sick and I truly hate it. I do not know if it is a sin, but if vulgarities exist in the message, do not listen to it!

I think it is sad when people discount all rap. I’m not sure if it sinful but listening to vulgar music be it pop, rap rock or any genre is not really good.

I think any form of music that has been christianized is generally awful and almost always sounds protestant. There’s this one rapping friar, whose name completely escapes me, and it is just terrible.

There are some great things, though. Basically all gregorian chant and medieval sacred music is wonderful. There are lots of goth bands (Dead Can Dance, Estampie, Our Lord Weeps, etc.) that do fantastic interpretations of said music. But as far as Christian rock/hip hop goes, its really all pretty bad.

Rap music by itself is not sinful. Although most rap music do contain lyrics ranging from questionable morality to outright immoral. So you have to judge if the music you are listening to contains these “explicit lyrics” or not. If not then its okay.

In my opinion, there are a ton of amazing Christian music artists. Maybe you should try to broaden the music you listen to. Some of my fav’s: Jeremy Camp, NeedtoBreathe, Addison Road, Dave Barnes has some Christian music, Gungor, Manifesto, etc. There really are tons out there that are great musicians.

To answer the question of the original poster, here is a great blog post you can read that may help you form your conscious on this issue:

Peace.

If you’re looking for decent Catholic rap, check out: C2Six, Lê, and Akalyte. they’re pretty good. also Fr. Stan Fortuna has SOME good songs, but not very many in my opinion. Hope this helps!

I am a practicing Catholic, and I listen to Rap music. I am an Eminem fan, that and more. I have my favorite artists and those that I dont like. I really dont think that LISTENING to it by itself is a sin. But there are also good rap artists that dont include violence (except to paint a picture and message of how the world is and all that) that shouldnt be bad to listen to. Bob Marley smoked weed, and yet most of his songs are peaceful and fun to swing and sing along to. But am I commiting a sin? I think as long as one doesnt ACT or FOLLOW what the song says or portrays it’s not a sin. :hmmm:

Broaden the music I listen to? I listen to so many different genres. I just can not stand Christian rock/pop. It was started by tent revival protestants and then copied by Catholics. There’s nothing worse than those RAISE YOUR HAND TO THE LORD bands, songs like SHOUT TO THE LORD and I CAN SING OF YOUR NAME FOREVER. One pretty decent album I like is Light In The Dark by Hector Zazou. It is traditional Catholic songs from Ireland, sung in Gaelic. I’m not too sure how religious he is but its still respectful nonetheless.

👍

Has anybody turned on the Pop station yet?

I thought about this too. I like to have rap playing when im grappling or lifting weights, the beats keep you motivated. But when the training stops, and I can actually understand what the artist is saying, I get really turned off by it. Because I know that God is right next to me listening with me, I even get embarassed to be listening to it.

Use the instrumentals.

I think you mean, “I Could Sing of Your Love Forever”. Good song in my opinion but not one of my favorites. Are you saying that you do not enjoy listening to them because it’s just not your thing, or that they are bad?
