Does anyone know if there has been a rap or hip-hop style Mass?
Since the “folk Mass” (or “guitar Mass” or “Hootenanny Mass”) was an attempt at reaching the youth, why does no one make an attempt to reach today’s youth with their own music?

Oh boy…

You have no idea the can of worms you just opened.

A rap Mass… LOL

There is a sub-sub-genre of Christian rap however - youtube “Catholic rap”.

It’s an idea, I guess… however, rap culture is, in my opinion, rooted in drug use, crime, and other evils, unlike folk or guitar music…

I think it could work.

Mostly true, but the basic form of rap (rhyme, rhythm, patter, cadence) can be separated from criminal and immoral culture and can be a very powerful method of communication. I don’t like most rap but I would be thrilled to hear a good, clean Rap Mass.

Yeah, it might be better for Teen Prayer Night or maybe just the Parish Talent Show.

There is no substitute for Gregorian chant in the Latin rite. It is the Word of God set to plainchant melodies. You never have to worry about the orthodoxy of the composer: the composers are the authors of the books of the Bible.

Other musical forms can convey the Word, including vernacular adaptations of Gregorian chant and polyphonic singing. I generally agree that Mass is not for entertainment, but it’s hard not to feel uplifted by good sacred music.

And before I’m labelled as some sort of radical traditionalist, I only attend Mass in the Ordinary Form, fortunately in a monastery where Gregorian chant is the norm every day of the week.

And here’s the kicker: I see plenty of young people, single, young couples and families… moved by Gregorian chant whenever I attend Mass at the monastery. And when our Gregorian schola sings in parishes, it is often the young people that come to ask us questions about this musical style after Mass, and to express gratitude for being exposed to it. It’s as if they are discovering something that their more revolutionary parents kept locked away and hidden from them.

Calling it love when it’s really lust
Saying you got a log in your eye when it’s really crust
Calling each other gods when we’re really dust
~yeeeeeaaaaaah~

(In the beat of “Gangsters Paradise”)
Come on and take this Cup, living in righteousness
Come on and take this Cup, living in righteousness

Take the Body, and take the Blood
Soul and Divinity too
All in all, through and through
Let us worship the Lord

Come on and take this bread, knowing it is not to be hated
Come on and take this bread, knowing it is Transubstantiated

Yeeeaaah

Let us bless
And don’t forget to confess
Your sins are forgiven
So let’s start livin’

Should be done in Latin street slang. The way it was spoken in da bad hoods in Rome in 33 AD.

on the topic of Christian rap, Lecrae is a really good artist… while I would never want to hear his music at Mass, its good, clean rap and he’s a talented rapper- metro boomin produced his last album, and they have some big nmes.

I’m 21 and don’t know anyone my age or younger who listens to rap or hip hop.

I’d advise against making Masses specifically for the youth. 99.999% of attempts at reaching “the youth” tend to wind up being cringe-fests.

Jesus Christ is my *****

That video is hilarious.

I still to this day don’t know if it’s serious or not.

Tantum ergo Sacraméntum.
Venerémur cérnui:
Et antíquum documéntum,
Novo cedat rítui:
Præstet fides supleméntum
Sénsuum deféctui.

Genitóri, Genitóque,
Laus et jubilátio:
Salus, honor, virtus quoque,
Sit et benefíctio:
Procedénti ab utróque
Compar sit laudátio.
Amen.

The hymns could easily be rapped, they’re already rhyming.
I don’t know Latin but back in the day when I tried to say the Rosary in Latin, I am pretty sure I at least once tried to rap the Ave Maria
