Rap or hip-hop Mass

no there are no logical arguments for such a ridiculous notion of a rap or hip hop mass.

First of all, I wouldn’t trust LifeSiteNews. It is known to have a bias against Pope Francis. The puppet Mass was a children’s Mass and they appear to be used as a teaching tool. There was no context provided for the tango Mass. In the U.S., couples can renew their wedding vows during a regular Sunday Mass, typically for big anniversaries. They usually kiss. Maybe in Latin America, the husband and wife dance too. The couple doing the tango looked old, so it might be their anniversary. But, I don’t know anything about Latin American Masses.

Your subtle anti-Catholicism consistently comes through in your posts.
I disagree with you on some issues, but your claim is not fair. I disagree for example, if you say that the only difference between Eastern Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy is the pope. I think that there are other differences as I have pointed out.

I once saw a televised Mass from Africa. Pope Francis was presiding. The people who bought the gifts to the altar were singing and dancing. Now mind you, it was not just money. But food from their harvest. I found it quite moving and joyful.

I think modern music is more for those who don’t listen to it on a daily basis. If you can dance on hip hop just any day, why also do it in Church? Old Christian music simply is unique, not just as music but as a ritual. It is a ritual and we want that, if we feel like going to a rock concert then we go there and maybe some of the priests who propose bringing it to church should go more often to concerts and maybe even clubs to see why “rigid” youth say modern belongs where it belongs keep on saying that.

This may surprise people, but rap / hip hop are now the “most consumed” music in these United States, which is why I chose that genre to imagine how newer Mass settings might attempt to appeal to younger folk a la the 1960s / 1970s.
Code:
"This summer, for the first time since Nielsen started measuring music consumption, hip-hop took over
from rock as America’s dominant genre. R&B/Hip-Hop now comprises
25.1% of all music consumption in the country, compared to 23% for
rock. Rap’s rise, of course, is intricately tied to the rise of
streaming."

Does folk music have a continual gang-based, womanizing, drug-using, violence filled culture? no. Rap does.

I enjoy singing “folk”/ “contemporary” songs, in fact, our parish (specifically our choir) sings mostly these song. I enjoy attending the LifeTeen mass (though I’m faaaarrrr from being a teen). I love the likes of Sara Kroger and Audrey Assad and if they write songs that can be used for mass they I’d be open to that and love to learn those songs too.

I’m not quite sure about a hiphop mass. Perhaps I say this because I’m not a big fan of hip hop/rap.

I’d rather hear alternative/light rock if we’re talking “different”.

I get you, but I suppose we can start having rap catholic music for the kids. I’m not entirely opposed to that. Music has a great impact on people (I know it does on me!) and if you relay God’s love, the beauty of sacraments and if a certain segment of the church can worship by singing or rapping, then by all means yes. (to be used doing praise and worship sessions, retreats etc…)

I get where youre coming from, but im not sold… its like saying, (for me personally) ‘catholic death metal’…

Look up Fr. Stan Fortuna. He’s been doing Catholic rap/hip-hop for decades. He’s one of the founding CFRs (along with Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Fr. Andrew Apostoli).

Personally I very much dislike “themed” Masses with a huge focus on the music rather than Jesus. I’ve been to a very “poppy” Mass before and the only thing I remember was the music. If the focus of the Mass isn’t on Jesus then the Mass, IMHO, is rather irreverent.

Personally, I don’t think Masses with the focus on music will bring people to Mass for the right reason. They’ll go for the music, not our Lord.
