 Laws of Rape (Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT

Anybody can explain this?

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

What kind of lunatic would make a rape victim marry her attacker?

Thank you.

It may have been a way to hold the attacker responsible for her. If he wanted her that bad, then he might as well take the responsiblity. I don’t think I could go through something like this. I’m sure that the man would feel entrapped. But maybe that was a deterrent used at that time.

What, would you rather that she was left to her own devices, probably unable to marry, since she was no longer virgin? Reliant on her family to the end of her days as a result? What if there was a child that needed support? Possibly subject (as rape victims in Islam can be today) to death by stoning for unchastity? All of this for something that was her own fault?

I think the idea is more deterrence than anything else - if a young man wanted to have his way with a woman he’d need to think VERY carefully, because he may well end up married to her! So the idea seems to have been to prevent rape by making the punishment substantial and lasting, as well as to protect the woman against at least some harms.

First, the passage you are referencing do not speak of being engaged, they speak of being betrothed - tow different states of being.

Second, the verse you are referencing speaks of a couple commiting fornication, rape is not mentioned (if you look at the verses before, it speaks of a woman shouting for help, that is a reference to rape) your verse references having sex without being married - they are required to get married, and cannot divorce.

you have to take into account that this was Old Testament. It is not necessarily relevant today in its straight forward meaning. when Jesus came in the New Testament he fulfilled the covenant and brought us the new law. There were many practices in the Old Testament that are frowned upon today, you have to remember that the Church that Christ built was not there to guide the people, so they made their own laws, which could have been wrong.

I can remember when there were shotgun marriages; some possibly with a visible shotgun.

It doesn’t have anything to do with rape. It means if a man and a virgin with no marriage contract have consenting sex he must marry her unless her father (spokesman and treasurer for the household) decides it’s a bad idea. Either way, the man pays the father (again, the father is just the treasurer; the money is for her) a month’s wages because more than that would have been really unlikely to be available then. No car to sell, no mortgage to take out. It was the normal bride-price. It went to the bride as a gift from her father during the wedding. No one could ever take it from her. It was her insurance in case of widowhood or a need to flee.
The reason a man who committed fornication with a woman wasn’t physically punished was that doing so wouldn’t help the resulting child, and besides he would have no further fonicating opportunities, a harder sentence than a man like that would want to risk. It worked as a deterrent.

Sorry but you’ve read your own interpretation into the passage. Here’s what it actually reads.

28 "If a man comes upon a maiden that is not betrothed, takes her and has relations with her, and their deed is discovered, 29 the man who had relations with her shall pay the girl’s father fifty silver shekels and take her as his wife, because he has deflowered her. Moreover, he may not divorce her as long as he lives.

This is actually a seduction because it says “their deed”, and if it had been a rape the guy would be stoned and she would go home to her parent’s house.

I suggest you dump that NLT for a real Catholic Bible with all 73 books in it. If you want something modern and all that, the above is from the New American Bible

We need to note one thing, which was perhaps already pointed out: the New Living Translation is more of a paraphrase than a true translation (and a very loose one at that).

A more literal rendering of the text would be:

If a man finds (matsa’ “to find (out),” “to learn”) a young woman, a virgin who is not betrothed ('aras “to be bethrothed,” “to engage”), and he seizes (tafas “to catch,” “to take hold of”) her and lies with her, and they are found out, then the man who lay with her must pay the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver and she must become his wife because he has violated her; he may never divorce her all his days.

So, what some of you guys are saying is that the word of god can’t be taken literally?
How do we suppose to take it literally and when not?
Why God didn’t make it clear.

Anyway, why God allow this to happen?
Remember, we are talking about a being that has the power to do anything.

What about this: (Deuteronomy 20:10-14)
As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you.

What kind of God approves of murder, rape, and slavery?

Thank you, trying to understand your book, as far as I know is a great myhologic book.

So you totally ignore the fact that your OP was not quoted right to jump into another verse from the bible?

Why don’t you address what has been stated that the original verse is misquoted.

Maybe than we can get a real and serious conversation going here.

Hey, funny how you are quoting Mother Theresa.
Did you read her last letter to the pope before she died?

“By the way the 1.4 Millions abortions”.
How many kids have you had adopted?

Now, a serious question: Why the Catholic church disaproves the use of condoms?
Thank you.

If you really want to talk about this start a new thread there so many who would love to let you know what we are doing to help the end to the butchering of our children.
