A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced the victim of a gang rape to 90 lashes of the whip because she was alone in a car with a man other than her husband.

The Jerusalem Post reports the high-profile and controversial trial ended with the convicted rapists sentenced to punishments ranging from one thousand lashes to as little as 80 — 10 fewer than the victim — along with prison terms of between one and five years. The woman’s family says it will appeal what it considers inadequate sentences for the rapists.

Can anyone tell me why we don’t hear more from Amnesty International when it comes to women’s rights in Muslim countries? Why isn’t this considered on par with the racial appartheid system that South Africa had? Why don’t we hear loud speeches at the UN about Saudi Arabia, one of the worst human rights abusers in the world?

What makes you think AI doesn’t report on the Saudis?

There is a whole section on the Middle East to as well as country by country listings

The reason would be that I never hear it reported in the mass media, only about every little violation that they see the United States do. All we hear is The United States did this, The United States did that. They act as if we are the biggest violators on the face of the earth.

And why exactly would you trust the ‘mass media’ to report accurately on this issue?
All we hear is The United States did this, The United States did that.
The United States certainly supports and enables the Saudi regime, if that’s what you mean.

No they don’t. Listen to what they are saying, rather than the media say they are saying. I went to see the director of Amnesty UK give a talk last week - she mentioned the United States, sure, but she had a lot more to say about horrible regimes such as Burma, and indeed China.

Don’t you think it is appropriate for US-based news agencies to report on what people are saying about the US?

Surely that impacts their audience much more than some far away country they know little of and can do less about.

I sure your average American already knows that we have a better human rights record than Burma. That is hardly headline news.

I believe Iran’s treatment of women is even worse than Saudia Arabia’s treatment of them. Iranians are Shi-ite Muslims, and I understand that Shia Islam permits a man to marry a woman
for ONE DAY, have sex with her, then divorce her the next day, and that he can do this as often as he wants to any woman he wants. And in Iran, I’ve read reports of the government stoning minors to death for “fornication,” etc, especially minor GIRLS.

I am shockled simply shocked. Shocked that the rapists were prosecuted at all. I must admist that I am pleased to see Saudi Arabian and muslim (lower case intentional) justice moving forward, perhaps even into the 8th century. We must applaud their truly amazing progress.

Because Christianity is evil and Islam is in voque.

Also, if you call the Pope or a bishop a bad person, no one pays attention. If say a moslem is behaving badly or explain an embarrasing truth about Islamic history, a world-wide fatwa calling for your murder will be issued. Heck, you can’t even draw a picture without people getting murdered.

Amnesty International, while it has many well-meaning members, chooses its targets based on hyper-liberal politics, not objective fact. Hence criticism for the USA with (exaggerated?) accusations of torture of terrorist prisoners. While it this is very bad, the fact they seem to silent on the outrages built into the law of nearly every Moslem country; outrages that affect who knows how many people every day, not just a comparative handful of really bad guys (and probably a few not so bad and innocent ones) held on a sub-tropical island. (Do not misunderstand me. I hold very much to the Church teaching of no matter how good and right the reason or motive may be, even the saving of lives, an evil act, e.g. torturing a terroist for info or murdering an abortion doctor, can never be justified.)

I will say that however uneven they may be, the influence they do manage to exert is usually positive and it does promote individual human dignity. So they are not all bad. I would just prefer it if they were bit more even handed.

Amnesty International has lost all credibility.

It has aligned itself to supporting abortion.

Or put another way: The worst form of child-abuse and the willful destruction of a human being when they are at their most vulnerable.

Amnesty International news print isnt worthy of any decent human being to use it to use as toilet paper
