Rapping the Apostles Creed?

Hi I belong to the High schoolers for Him group at our Parrish. We meet Sunday mornings so its like CCD. This past Sunday we broke up in to group and have to present a project type thing in 2 weeks. Well my group choose to do one about the church. One kid suggested to Rap something that sums up the Church in a way. Well the Nicene Creed was to long so another suggested to rap the Apostles Creed which as many of you know is like the Nicene but shorter. My question is, do you all think raping the Apostles creed is disrespectful? Of course we won’t use profane Lyrics a lot of today’s raps use but still we are using a lot of slain and common rap words. I don’t approve of it too much. Again what are your opinions?

You mean rapping the Apostles Creed. I understand simple misspellings happen. I make them myself and I generally ignore them when I see them in others’ posts, but you really don’t want to misspell this word this way.

As to whether I think rapping the Apostles Creed might be disrespectful, well yes, I certainly think it could be, depending on how it was done. But I think it could also be done respectfully. I think Fr. Stan Fortuna could do so respectfully.

I am also concerned that you are thinking about using lots of slain. I hope that is another misspelling.

I think we need to maintain the sense of the sacred. When we don’t the effect is that what is sacred is no longer so sacred for most people. That’s what I’ve seen. The christian world has really lost this sense at present. We should endeavour to revive it, not belittle it.

You should not change the words. The creed as written is our faith. It should be done respectfully and so that it can be understood. I don’t know how musically talented your group is, but doing different parts in different musical styles can give a sense of history. You could start with chant and end with rap. However, this would only work if you have the musical talent to pull it off.

As a means of teaching the Apostles Creed to CCD students, I don’t think rapping it would be wrong.

However, this should never serve as a substitute to praying the Apostles Creed.

I kind of agree with that. I mean, its supposed to be special, sacred.

Would it be morally wrong to say, instead of wearing a bride’s dress, for a woman on her wedding day to wear a t-shirt and jeans? No, maybe not morally wrong, but it’d be turning something that is supposed to be ‘special’ into something every day and common.

See if Fr. Stan Fortuna has done something like this. I remember a song he did for a World Youth day that had many elements of the faith .

Life Teen sings a creed song instead of the recitation. I’m not thrilled with it but it seems to be allowed.

as long as the slang and rap words do not contain profanity, vulgarity or blasphemy, this sounds like a great idea. Make sure however–and this is why from my POV it is a great learning experience–that when you translate the words, you translate the meaning, the full meaning, the real meaning. Every single word in the Creed has weight and is full of meaning, so changing a word can change the meaning.

you will find this a real challenge, and I hope you take time to evaluate your rap and see if and when you did lose some of the meaning, or worse, trivialize it.

there is no chance we are going to change the way we pray the Creed based on your “translation” but it is a good experience for you to find out how deep the meaning is when you do try to translate. It is a bona fide way to reflect on the prayer to put it in your own words–as long as you realize they are your own words, not God’s

you already saw how a couple of typos in your OP changed drastically the meaning of your question–this exercise will help you see the importance of words and even single letters, and what happens when you try to change them.
