What is the Roman Catholic rapture?

And yes, I got the book, the Rapture Trap, but its just frilly details, I do not like to beat around the bush but get straight to the doctrine.

Sorry to disappoint you, but there is no doctrine. The Church has never formally interpreted the various escatological Biblical texts. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

There is no such thing. Rapture theology is a fairy tale made up in modern times to comfort people who don’t feel like Christians should have to endure the trials of the apocalypse…

Honestly, I think the Roman Catholic Rapture would just be getting so focused on prayer or communion with God that your soul feels lifted up to Heaven.

Catholics don’t have a Rapture theory like some Protestant denominations do. We don’t believe that, near the end of the world, believers will be raised up and essentially watch from Heaven as the non-believers suffer through the end of times. Catholics believe that everyone on earth when it ends (believer and non-believer alike) will suffer through the end of times, and only those who perservere until the end will be saved. I don’t have any documents that I can recommend you look at stating thus, unfortunately, but I will tell you that I never heard the word Rapture used (except as a lower case “r” to denote some sort of lifting contemplation experience) until I lived in the South and heard some types of Protestant denominations refer to it when discussing the end of the world. There are probably some Catholic documents that you can find outlining with greater specificity the Catholic perspective of what the end of the world might be like, but, since that isn’t a real interest area of mine, I can’t provide you with any links. Sorry I can’t be of more help to you.

Catholic interpreters tend not to distinguish the Rapture from Christ’s glorious Second Coming.

Catholics do not believe in the rapture. We are to live each day as it is our last and leave the rest to God.

It’s not a matter of “tendency”. The Rapture was taught by nobody prior to the 1800s. Historically, the Second Coming and the gathering into Heaven are the same event.

The Rapture, or “catching up” of living persons when Christ returns is what the Church teaches. It does not teach that some people will be taken out of this world while the rest are left behind to face Armageddon. That idea came from a revivalist group in the 19th century led by Presbyterian minister Edward Irving, who left his denomination for form his own following. Later, John Darby took up his ideas, expanded on them and spread them. It has no origins in the Early Church or anyone else, not even the Reformers before them.

It’s a 19th century invention. Wasn’t it an American Protestant?

The “rapture” is a fairly recent thing. Dispensational theology first started not more than 100 years ago.
The whole idea behind the “rapture” is that Jesus returns, takes the church to Heaven and leaves everybody else behind. The antichrist emerges, the whole whore of babylon/pseudoChristianity thing, then Israel becomes Christian and begins a period of mass-evangelization. Then Jesus comes back again and finishes up.

The problem with this is that when Jesus returns, the living and the dead will be judged, Heaven and Hell will receive their final populations and very simply, that will be it. The only way that you can properly interpret the dispensational rapture thing is if Jesus comes back more than once, and the Bible itself is quite clear on that.

It’s hokey. If you have the Left Behind books, dump them. They are just plain wrong.

Hello JD, Since you don’t like to beat around the bush, I won’t.

The rapture and second and final coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the same event. I will tell you exactly when it is coming.
Read this verse:
John 6:53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you 54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and** I will raise him up at the last day.
**
The Catholic rapture will happen on the last day, Scripture says so.
Peace to you
David

The Gospel of Mark chapter 13 is how things will be as Jesus gives us an account of the last days and thats about as close as you can get.

I believe it was svid2 It was a pentecostal belief that was started in the late 1800s I believe be cause I come from a pentecostal church of god background but now I am a member of The One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church and they believed that.

The Catechism…

675 Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers.574 The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth575 will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.576

676 The Antichrist’s deception already begins to take shape in the world every time the claim is made to realize within history that messianic hope which can only be realized beyond history through the eschatalogical judgment. The Church has rejected even modified forms of this falsification of the kingdom to come under the name of millenarianism,577 especially the “intrinsically perverse” political form of a secular messianism.578

677 The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection.579 The kingdom will be fulfilled, then, not by a historic triumph of the Church through a progressive ascendancy, but only by God’s victory over the final unleashing of evil, which will cause his Bride to come down from heaven.580 God’s triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the Last Judgment after the final cosmic upheaval of this passing world.581

and…

1186 Finally, the church has an eschatological significance. To enter into the house of God, we must cross a threshold, which symbolizes passing from the world wounded by sin to the world of the new Life to which all men are called. The visible church is a symbol of the Father’s house toward which the People of God is journeying and where the Father "will wipe every tear from their eyes."65 Also for this reason, the Church is the house of all God’s children, open and welcoming.

and…

2771 In the Eucharist, the Lord’s Prayer also reveals the eschatological character of its petitions. It is the proper prayer of “the end-time,” the time of salvation that began with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and will be fulfilled with the Lord’s return. The petitions addressed to our Father, as distinct from the prayers of the old covenant, rely on the mystery of salvation already accomplished, once for all, in Christ crucified and risen.

Bottom line, we do not know when the last day is coming, so be prepared…

Nah… look at my link above. Basically was concocted by John Nelson Darby in about 1825…read the link above for details.

The verse about being called up into the air to meet Christ is the worst interpreted by Protestants. St. Augustine said that on the last day that some would be called up into the air to meet Jesus on his way down. Like when a dignitary visits and people go to the airport to meet him and follow the dignitary into town.

There is an excellent lecture on the topic at this Catholic website.
Look for “The Rapture and the Bible.”

IIRC, the title of rapture comes from the Latin Vulgate funny enough.

The Catholic church does not teach the false dispensational teaching of the Rapture.
It is a false teaching from the 1800’s. The Rapture Trap is a very good book, I am surprised
you thought it was frilly. It is dangerous because it leads those who believe in it into a false security that they will escape suffering and also causes its adherents to withdraw from the world since they are going to be taken away from all this evil and suffering. If you follow this garbage, you would be less likely to “become the salt” of the earth and to work to advance God’s kingdom.

I think there is a bit of a language barrier. The Rapture, is derived from the Latin text I believe it was Rapimier as stated above!

The word Rapture has unfortunately been highjacked by Dispensationalist. There is room to believe in a calling up, as you have probably read, but not a 7 year Pre-trib, Mid-Trib, Post-Trib Rapture as dispensationalist teach.

We look at the second advent as a one time event. No secret rapture of Christians while Jews and non-believers are LEFT BEHIND!

You can see some of the Catholic view in an Ignatius Study Bible.

Google…Partial Preterism or Orthodox Preterism!
