Rare circumcision ritual generates controversy

NEW YORK - For thousands of years, rabbis performed a simple procedure to cleanse the wound during a ritual circumcision: Like outdoorsmen treating a snake bite, they sucked blood from the cut and spit it out.

That age-old procedure is now the subject of a clash between religion and science in modern-day New York.

Prompted by a child’s death from an infection, the state Health Department is drawing up its first set of safety guidelines governing the practice, which was abandoned by most Jews long ago but has survived among the ultra-Orthodox in a few Hasidic communities. Read more

This seems like the most gentle way to describe what happens.
 I had no idea. I think they need to get with the times we are living in.

Am I reading into this correctly?
The Rabbi sucks the wound made from the circumcision?

THe question is should a Mohel put his mouth on an infants penis …is it really needed, NOPE! There are otherways to cleanse a wound and they are much safer both parties involved!
So the question is why contiue a practice that has effects or could have health effects on both parties (baby and Mohel)?
Why dont parents say something about it…I mean does it really sound right to you for a stranger to have his mouth on your sons penis?

This is what I was wondering.
Stranger or not…no ones mouth should be on any infant’s penis.

Was this the same ritual Jesus had performed on him?
There were no AIDS back then …but still…did a Rabbi perform this sort of thing on Jesus?

Would it make a difference?
Now a days with all the diseases out there…I would not want some man that had sucked 1000 or hundreds of other babies penis sucking my sons…heck no one sucks the babies penis! Just not right!

1000 or 100?
All it takes is one to infect a person.
They really must change their ways.

Depends on the Mohel…some have sucked 1000’s others only 100’s.
Ans yes the practice should change…but it seems that the Orthodox community will not change or at least at this point they are unwilling to change.
