Greetings in the name of the most High Jah.

Firstly let I introduce Iself. My name is Roots, i am a Rastafarian Male living in the UK, England.
I am looking to faith build and discuss our slightly contrasting paths, to anyone who wishes to reason with me! šŸ™‚

Now let me first give a very quick passage on what the Rastafarian way of life is.

Rastafarians are rooted Christians who read the bible a chapter a day. We do not aline to any ā€œchurchā€ as we belive the spirit of GOD dwells within EVERY Man [and living thing]. The Human body is our Holy Temple, so no harm should come to it, [self artificially change, Tattoos, Piercings etc].
We are commonly associated with Robert Nesta Marley [Bob Marley], which is a very fair assumption indeed. We will grow our hair and grow our dreadlocksā€¦
This is in line with a Nazarite Vow, and also to show our faith to god, and showing the whole world that we are ā€˜not the same as youā€™. We see locks as a deeply spiritual thingā€¦

On November 2, 1930, Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned king of Ethiopia. Upon his coronation, he claimed for himself the titles of "Emperor Haile Selassie (Power of the Trinity) I, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah.

Haile Selassie was the 225th in an unbroken line of Ethiopian monarchs of the Solomonic Dynasty. This dynasty is said to have been founded in the 10th century BC by Menelik I, the son of the Biblical King Solomon and Makeda, the Queen of Sheba, who had visited Solomon in Israel. 1 Kings 10:13 claims "And King Solomon gave unto the Queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants

So Rastas are Christian people, but we are disagree on alot of Catholic Principles especially as GOD said ā€œwe are all equalsā€

But Bob Marley, Was and Is a Rastafarian, not a christian,

Haile Selassie was an emperor. He may have established Ethiopian Orthodox Church as a state Church but he wasnā€™t the head.

Bob Marley was Baptized in the Orthodox Church shortly before his death. Whether his conversion was real or not can be debated, but it would seem like a fake conversion on his part would discredit him as still being a true Rastafarian. At least that is how many would look at it.

Hello. The Rasta faith has always intrigued me. I respect it as I do any other religion, though.

I have a question that is perhaps a bit obvious. Isnā€™t it right that Rastafarian men smoke ganja to receive spiritual enlightenment?

One thing that has never been explained to me: Ras Tafari (Haile Selassieā€™s pre-coronation name) was an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian, right? So why arenā€™t more Rastafarians attracted to the EOTC? Or are they? It seems strange to me that this man who they say is hod is an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian. I figure if it is good enough for godā€¦ šŸ˜‰

But Iā€™m sure I have something mixed up here, because the only Rastfari believers I ever met who werenā€™t Anglo-American converts who just like to smoke marijuana were a family who came from Jamaica to open up a pizza place in Eugene, Oregon where I used to live. I donā€™t think they spent very much time talking about the theology of their religion, but they did make some good pizza.

A good question, thank you. Firstly its like the argument of ā€œjesus was jewish so why isnt everyone that follows jesus, jewish?ā€ :)ā€¦ The basic principle here, is that through JAHs messenger [Bob Marley] Haile Selassie I was really heard, and we know as Rasta, that he is linage of the Solomon Line [Sheba] who as we know came to Israel and returned to Ethopia to give birth. Just As Jesus, created Christianity, from Judaism [being a practising jew] Haile Selassie has created Rastafarian movement [A practising Christian] šŸ™‚

Right about Ganja,

It is not written that you should smoke ganja. Many do, and many do not. It is more of a cultural thing to Rastaā€™s [The movement started in the West Indies where there is a lot of ganja]

However if you check this video from 2:27 this Rasta talks about Ganja in relation to Moses and Mount Sinaiā€¦ IT is important to hear this perspective, but be careful of taking everything at face value.

Rastafari isnt a ā€œreligionā€ it is a Spirtuality. So Not One Rasta shares Exactly the same views. Some of us smoke Ganja and some of us dont. Some are completley vegetarian, some are not. You overstand? It is common back in the early beginings of Rastafari that many people see Haile Selassie I as the head creator. Now i know for a fact christians are immedietly turned away from Rastafari because of this. This is a misconception of the majoirty of Rasta who do not see Selassie I as the most High, But the King of Kings from the Linage of King David, and the king from GOD. It all links to gether in what non-rastas would call ā€œcoincidenceā€ but there is too many of these ā€œcoincidencesā€ to make the faith unreal

As much as I enjoy listening to Bob Marley (my favorite song is ā€œcoming in from the coldā€) I donā€™t much like the fact that he had only-god-knows-how-many children with a lot of different women ā€¦

I can assure you that Bobs many women over his life time is pure and simply Caribbean Culture, and not linked in any way to Rastafari.

Jamaicans especcially have a tendency to see alot of women but that is just jamaica culture, not his faith at allā€¦

  1. The common thread comes from a few sources, one being Revalations Chapter 5 verse 5 "Then one of the elders said to me, ā€œDo not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.ā€
Also PSALM 87
1His foundation is in the holy mountains.
2The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God! Selah
4"I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know Me; behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia: `This man was born there.ā€™"
5And of Zion it shall be said, "This and that man were born in her; and the Highest Himself shall establish her.
6The LORD shall count, when He writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah [light, selassie]

7Singers as well as players on instruments shall be there and say, ā€œAll my springs are in thee.ā€ [Gods Message through music, Bob marleys music spread thoughout the world, promotiong world peace, justice, unity of all races]

Now i will try and answer this as best i can, Iman only human so not perfect ;). Basically in the early 1900s when Selassie I was king, the flag of ethopia was red, gold, green, with a Lion in the centre, holding a Cross. This is the lion of judah, and Haile Selassieā€™s personal emblem. Selassie I had a remakable ability to stand by lions,

There are also links to the bible of Christ coming in different characters, which i cannot rememnber exact versus, but i am sure that some of you guys can, where Christ comes in his Kingly Characterā€¦
It is important to note that Selassie I as the messiah, was a very early belief, and is not common nowadays
  1. Haile Selassie I denied divinity of being ā€œGODā€ or a Prophet, becuase the eyes of the world were watching. He visited around the world, including america and the caribbean. If someone openly claimed that they were Jesus, you would think immedietly that they were abit bonkers in the head. So haile selassie i Could not openly say that he was, as this would undermine his role in the church etc etc, šŸ™‚ , hope that answers your question.
  2. The sources i will get for you and send you, alot of it comes from records in Israel and Ethopia which show a family tree of an ā€˜unbroken linageā€™ from king solomon. The Ethopian Church hold the seven seals, and also have records of Ethopian Royalty well before the time of Jesus.
  3. Again i will get you versus, but it is important for me to say, that the use of the herb being cultural allows meditating and calmness. It calms people and allows people prayer and meditation on a higher level. A rasta man, will not get drunk on alchohol, as this means EGO takes over your conciousness and does not alloow you clear thoughtā€¦ Alchohol is a DRUG, and Ganja, is a herb, a naturally growing substance whereas alchhol has to be processed in some way.
  4. I am personally not a experienced smoker myself, so i cannot accuratly answer your question at this time, but i will check it out for you.

I have a number of great friends who share your beliefs to some degree.

I am interested in how you see Haile Selassie as God incarnate, as I understand it, the Rastafarian movement perceives Haile Selassie as a messianic figure who will lead the peoples of Africa and the African diaspora to a golden age of peace, righteousness, and prosperity. But how can that be if he is dead?

Also, do you believe that he died of respiratory failure or do you believe he was assassinated?

What about Ethiopiaā€™s links with Judaism?

Hi-ya there Rasta Roots, ~ all I want to say is that Iā€™ve know quite a few Rasta in my lifetime and let me tell you, in my opinion, they are all great guys & gals.

Real down to earth people and very kind & gentle and great food & cooks!!! . šŸ˜ƒ
