i am going to try and respond in full to each post in the last week or so that i havent aswered to . so a long post coming up, so i hope that respected posters can offer me feedback into whether i have answerd their questions sufficiently

Both, Jesus Christ is the Messiah and son of God, right? This is true to every Rasta. Now RasTafari is “power of the trinity”. - right abit of honesty here becuase i am still on the path of learning i am really yet to fully overstand trinty, but basically Haile Selassie I is Gods spirit alive within the Trinity, and the true line of GODs kings…
So check it, Jesus and Haile Selassie I are two sperate beings for Rastas, Jesus being messiah, and Selassie being the King of kings, on the throne of David. This i hope answers your question.
The lyrics are to adress false teachings, and for people to really worship, instead of going to church “praying to wipe away sin” and thats a done deal.
[what i am unsure of is why lots of christians only see jesus and no one else, here the line of kings is a real thing man!] 🙂

Blessings! Yes Rastas [especially those living in the caribbean and africa are mostly vegetarians. This is a life-style and culture thing, not a --faith bracket-- thing.
Basically the idea is not to put dead flesh into your body! Rastas dont go to chruch becuase we know that the temple of spirtuality is our bodies. Spirit and flesh are very different to Rastas. So we do not harm, tatoo, piece out skin and flesh. We respect our bodies as if it were the holy temple itself, becuase for us, it is 🙂 … Sooo rastas and meat is a personal one… Some Rastas eat meat, some do not. simple as … However, you would be hard pressed to find a rasta who eats pork.

Haile Selassie IS Rastafari. He is a othodox christian. So what?! . Jesus practised Judaism, and haile Selassie practises Chrisitanity… Rastas are Christians ;).

My question is: Were you raised in Rasta spirituality, or did you come to it as an adult? What was that like for you, either way? Have you traveled or lived in places where Rasta is the dominant culture/faith, and how was that different for you? Do you find that you come in for some discrimination and ignorance related to your dreadlocks or your faith? I would love to hear the story of how you came to your faith.

No i wasnt “raised” a rasta, i was raised in no faith [not atheist just not religious], i found rasta early at the age of 11-12, and belive me, it was tough being that age and white to be a rasta with my class mates… What was it like for me?? well it changed my life, it is a seriously seriously positive culture, with music and love for humaity being the two major things, we do not chant war, we chant god music and love…
I travel to Tobago every year [going next week wooppee] which is in the south Caribbean, and i spent many afternoons reasoning with a bible and on the beach, absolute heaven for me! 🙂 cha! 🙂

Erm , not 100% what you mean, but yes ethopian othodox is one of the oldest christian churches, and it is Eastern chrisitanity, not “western” so there is one difference… the ethopian church really really focuses on all the bible! 🙂

Based on this and other comments, it seems you are in some way associated with or influenced by the Twelve Tribes of Israel house of Rastafari, or at least moreso than Bobo Shanti and Niyabinghi. Is that true?

He was baptized Berhane Selassie (light of the Trinity) in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Very true. There are three major mansions or houses of Rastafari (Twelve Tribes of Israel, Bobo Shanti, and Niyabinghi), many Rastas who combine their beliefs and practices, and many Rastas with other beliefs and practices. Some Rastas have considered me a fellow Rasta, while others do not. There is a lot of variety.

The real lyrics are:

“We’re sick and tired of your ism-schism games / ‘die and go to heaven in Jesus’ name!’ / We know and we understand / almighty God is a living man.”

“Ism-Schism” is a term referring to real or perceived religious factiousness, sectarianism, or denominationalism. Rastas generally reject what they call “isms,” e.g. Lutheranism or Methodism or Catholicism, which is one of the reasons they usually refer to their spirituality as “Rastafari” and sometimes take offense at “Rastafarianism.”

The first two lines (“We’re sick” through “Jesus’ name”) express Rasta frustration with the attempts of “ism” Christians to convert Rastas to their various denominations and sects.

The lyrics you are interpreting as a denial of Jesus’ divinity are actually an affirmation of Rasta belief that God is living incarnate. (How God is living incarnate varies among Rastas; some would point to Jesus, others to Haile Selassie, who was still alive at the time.)

Some Rastas believe Haile Selassie is Jesus. Some believe Jesus is the Messiah and Emperor Selassie specially manifests Jesus’ kingly character. There’s a lot of variety. Check out the book by William SpencerDread Jesus for a lot more detailed exploration. by Karl Phillpotts NaphtaliThe Testimony of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I, on the other hand, presents a specifically Twelve Tribes view.

Am I the only one here who thinks this thread and the way everyone is taking it so seriously is just goofy? Greetings in the name of the most High Jah? Give me a break? A religion with Bob Marley as its most famous adherent isn’t winning me over anytime soon…
 
With that kind of thinking, Gurney, I would think that you would be ready and willing to convert to Greek Orthodoxy. After all, they’ve got Tom Hanks! 😛

I don’t know if you noticed, but no one here was trying to ‘win over’ anyone. This thread was begun as an interfaith dialogue, toward mutual understanding and respect. You indicate that you are unwilling to give respect to others whose beliefs and practices are foreign and strange to you.

Why do you want to be that way?

Please note that this is the “Non-Catholic Religions” forum, and that in this forum you can probably expect to read about beliefs and practices you don’t share. To deride those beliefs as ‘goofy’ is to deny the non-Catholics in question the appreciation they deserve as human beings: that they have come by their beliefs honestly, that they are posting here out of interest in what Catholics have to say, and that no matter what a person believes, he or she is precious and beloved of God.
