"Rather, blessed are those..."

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The Gospel is always “Good News”, yet today as I heard the Gospel from Luke, I could hardly contain the joy I felt hearing the words of Jesus, (I underlined them below):

While Jesus was speaking,
a woman from the crowd called out and said to him,
“Blessed is the womb that carried you
and the breasts at which you nursed.”
He replied, “Rather, blessed are those
who hear the word of God and observe it.” (Luke 11:27-28)

What made me rejoice was the Truth Jesus is, and the Truth He always speaks. Jesus told the woman from the crowd, and all of us, His beautiful truth: not only because Mary’s womb carried Him and her breasts nursed Him is she blessed, but rather she heard God’s Word and did the Truth she heard lovingly.

Moreover Jesus counts with Mary all her children born again of water and the Spirit, who would be His disciples with Mary in saying: “blessed are those”. Not only is Mary blessed but we can be blessed as well to “hear the word of God and observe it”. From His Cross Jesus gave Mary to us as our Mother and Model. Let us rejoice in God our Savior, Who does all things well!

Mary Mother of God, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

Thanks Mary,

Ah but the eloquence comes of course from Jesus’ Words! The Truth which comes from the fullness of His Heart toward Mary is precious. The more we listen to Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church on the union of Mary with God, the more joyful we become for she is all we are called to be, by God’s Grace and the power of the Holy Spirit!

Dear Liturgy96,

Thanks for your reply, and your love for Jesus and Mary. Yes, how truly “inspiring” are Jesus’ words: “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it”. Why do we not all the more eagerly listen to everything Jesus said and did. Why do we not remain in His word, and live as Mary did on this earth?"

Each needs to answer for oneself, but everyday is new with new mercies in it, may we begin today to listen and remain in His word remembering Jesus also promised:

“If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples,
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your Faithful. Kindle in us the Fire of Your Love. Overshadow us as you overshadowed Mary and bring new life into our souls. Enable us to become more and more like Mary, Your Spouse. May Christ live in us by your power as He lived in Mary on earth and now lives in union with her in heaven.

Very interesting observation! The Beatitudes have also been called a “portrait of Jesus” thus if persons hear the Word and keep it, as Mary did, doing the Truth as it is revealed, then surely those persons will grow as Mary did – more and more like Christ! Blessed are those indeed!
