Hi, Phil.BibleReader << those same little children would be ASTONISHED at, and LAUGH at, those Christians who think that the Adam and Eve story is history. They would think the ancient Hebrew version of, “WHAT???!!! THEY THINK THAT THE CAT-IN-THE-HAT REALLY EXISTED???!!!” >>
Yes, you mean these Christians who wrote the Catechism:
There are certainly symbolical and figurative elements in the story, but Adam/Eve certainly appear historical according to the Catechism. Although Georgetown theologian John Haught would agree with you (see his Responses to 101 Questions on God and Evolution, page 80-81).
- By his sin Adam, as the first man, lost the original holiness and justice he had received from God, not only for himself but for all human beings.
- Adam and Eve transmitted to their descendants human nature wounded by their own first sin and hence deprived of original holiness and justice; this deprivation is called “original sin.”
- As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers, subject to ignorance, suffering and the domination of death, and inclined to sin (this inclination is called “concupiscence”).
- “We therefore hold, with the Council of Trent, that original sin is transmitted with human nature, “by propagation, not by imitation” and that it is… ‘proper to each’” (Paul VI, CPG § 16).

I’m going to “colloquialize” my presentation, here, to more quickly and efficiently make my point.
Our current pope not only approved the Catechism paragraphs you scanned-into the thread here, but he may have actually drafted them.
Now, let us assume that he did.
Do you REALLY think that Ratzinger would tell an audience, “Well, yes! There was this guy, Adam, and this girl, Eve. And neither had belly-buttons, because neither was ever in a womb, attached to an umbilical cord attached to a placenta, having been created directly by God, like the angels, with no intervening parents. And at first God, after He brought this belly-buttonless guy Adam into existence, tried unsuccessfully to partner him up with various animals – see Genesis 2:18 to 20 – because, well, God was a little thick-headed, to tell you the truth! But finally God figured it out! He pulled the girl, Eve, out of Adam’s side, like a modern-day clone, and built-up Eve out of the guy’s rib, and introduced them!”
Yes, the Adam and Eve account, at Genesis 2:18-20, portrays God as being sorta “stupid.” Read it. It does.
Believe me, believe me, even Ratizinger does not believe the literal truth of the story. He, too, knowsw that it is FICTION.
The Adam and Eve story is one big typological metaphor, teaching theology. I repeat: It is very obvious in Hebrew. Even ancient Hebrew children MUST have realized that it was a kind of “Dr. Seuss” piece of fiction, teaching religious truth.
Ratzinger also either approved, or personally drafted, Catechism Paragraphs 128, 129 and 130.
In my opinion, the Paragraphs you site are simply only making conscious use of the same metaphors.
