RB, JM, Uncle N, and all who have died without a funeral Mass being offered

R.B. has died. She and her husband D.B. used to sit near my family and me during Mass, but three years ago we started going to two different parishes. She will not be having a public service.

J.M. is someone I don’t know, but I saw her in my local obituaries. She is a life-long humanist, and she desired no funeral service.

My great uncle died last year and had a Communion service that was presided over by a deacon, rather than the Mass of Christian Burial. A Rosary was also said the night before.

Let us also pray for everyone who has died without having a Mass celebrated for them, whether this was intentional or not, and for all people planning not to have Mass. My understanding is that it is not technically required for Catholics to have a funeral Mass, but it seems that most people in purgatory would like help, and what is a more powerful prayer than the Mass?

Hail Mary
Full of grace,
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art Thou amongst women
And blessed is the fruit of Thy womb,
Jesus
Holy Mary
, Mother of God
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of death, Amen

For these and all who have died in God’s love

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

People’s relatives and friends can have a Mass said for them after they die.
You also don’t need to tell anybody if you do this.
I have had Masses said for deceased friends and relatives of mine who didn’t have one. In several cases they didn’t have a funeral Mass because they weren’t Catholic, but I could arrange to have a Mass said for their soul at a later time.

I am happy to pray for all these people, regardless, but if someone is your relative or close friend, consider having a Mass said for them yourself.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.
