Why is St. Bartholomew’s always ignored around here?
Part of confessing sins is to admit that you tried to kill my ancestors and did kill alot of their neighbours and friends.

Let me guess 🙂 - because it happened

I grew up in the UK thinking only Protestants had been killed, under “Bloody Mary”; that Catholics had come for a tough time, I had no idea - I had no reason to, as I had 0 knowledge of Catholicism. Yet both religions have legal protection & freedom in the UK, & both are highly visible - provided that one thinks of looking for them in the right places.

People aren’t bigoted - just ignorant. How can one not be ignorant of what one has no reason even to think about ? People aren’t usually anti-Catholic, or anti-Protestant - Catholicism (or Protestantism, or Islam, or whatever) simply doesn’t show up on their radar; unless there’s some great reason for it to do so. That a creed is conscious of itself, in no way means everyone else is.

I think what you really mean is the Roman/Latin RITE of the Catholic Church. There is NO Roman Catholic Church. The Eastern Catholics are a RITE with in the Catholic Church. There are not a separate church from their western berthern. When you refer to the Church as the Roman Catholic Church you are doing a real disservice to our eastern berthern. The Eastern Catholics do recognize the authority of the Pope. Do you recognize the authority of the Pope?

Pius XI used the term “Roman Catholic Church”.

I don’t see the problem - I always took it to mean, “The Catholic (= universal) Church which has its visible centre at Rome”. It doesn’t matter that it was originally pejorative (in 1570 or so): if “Methodist” & “Quaker”, also at first pejorative (like “Christian”, maybe ?) can lose their sting - why can’t “Roman Catholic [Church]” ? I’ll settle for “Papist” - it has the virtue of brevity.

BTW, I recognise the authority of the Bishop of Rome, who as pastor of the unioversal Church is called the Pope [of Rome]. Adherents of H.H. Pope Shenouda III, Patriarch of Alexandria, please note 🙂

If clergy had been less fond of all these high-sounding titles, & had been less ambitious to rule others, none of this confusion would arise in the first place. Do we need all these Holinesses, Beatitudes, Catholicoses, Archbishops, Most Holy Lords, Excellencies, & whatnot ? What’s wrong with elder, fellow-elder, presbyter, 🙂 ? ##

Bishop Michael of East Anglia diocese in UK prefers the simple title ‘Bishop’. He has no time for ‘Your Lordship’. He reckon there is only one Lord…
