Hi everyone! I am non Catholic who just recently joined rcia! I was invited to join by the deacon and even though I have missed a good 12 classes they still encouraged me to come. So I obviously missed a lot! One big important thing I mistakenly did was get in line for communion this past Sunday and received it. I learned later on from one of the students that we were not supposed to. I was baptized as an infant in my local Presbyterian Church and throughout childhood my grandmother took me to her Catholic church and I received communion there with no hesitation so now I’m wondering if what I did was sacrilegious since I’m not a confirmed catholic…yet?

It is a serious matter, but it doesn’t sound like one you can be blamed for since no one instructed you on it. That’s one of the Catholic teachings on sin: there is a difference between what we call grave matter and a sin itself. In order for something to be a sin, you need to have knowledge of it and deliberately consent to disobedience. I would not stress about it, but you should not receive again until Easter (or whenever your RCIA program finishes with you being received into the Church).

Absolutely learned a big lesson! I have a sponsor now and a few books to study so I won’t make a big mistake like that again

I’m also going through RCIA…My sponsor told me to get in line for communion, but when you get to the Priest cross your arms over your chest and he will bless you . That’s what I do, and it’s my favorite part of Mass! <3

That’s all water under the bridge now. No need to worry about the past since you can’t change it and you did not know the rules. Just begin following the regulations of the Church for those preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation.

Once you receive “First Communion” at Easter, that will become the recorded date of the Sacrament for you since that will be the first time you received with canonically regularity. Redecoration of First Communion is not required by Church Law but is almost universally done by parishes. So, have no worries about this. Be at peace.
