I own a copy of this book, which details everything about being a Pope, from the perspective of a tongue-in-cheek how-to guide for the reader, the “new” pontiff, called How to be Pope. It is very detailed in past history, the election process, what popes can and can’t do, the Vatican and its buildings, and the like. It’s not imprimatur or anything, but it is accurate.

Suggest that the current method of “electing” a pope is not unlike the method the apostles used to select a replacement for Judas - and that in both cases, the assumption is that the Holy Spirit will direct/control the process.

Can you say more? Popes have always been elected.

I’d suggest the classic film “Shoes of the Fisherman” = the ending of the movie is awful, but the election process in the move is fantastic

What does your candidate dislike about the process? To me, the idea of a group coming together prayerfully to discern who should be Pope (or who should be the leader of some other community) seems very reasonable. What process would he like to see used?

Try reading the book “Passing the Keys” by Francis A. Burkle-Young. It has an in-depth descriptions of the elections and theological positions of various popes.
The book “His Holiness” by Carl Bernstein and Marco Politi on John Paul II, has a chapter “Conclave”, where an in depth discussion on the election of John Paul II to the papacy. Good luck to you.
