I was assigned to prepare a lecture for my RCIA class about Catholic Morality. Since it is a very broad subject, I do not know where to start. Any recommendations such as books, articles, even how to present this topic will be appreciated.

God Bless,

I would start with explaining how Catholic Morality is rooted in Natural Law: do good, avoid evil.

I just finished a presentation that I will be presenting tomorrow night on Catholic Morality and Conscience Formation. I did about six hours of prep (not including previous experience) for my fifty minute session. I utilized the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Vatican II Documents (Gaudium et Spes), and aside from other resources, I found the National Directory for Catechesis quite helpful. This is a very broad and subjective topic but we must adhere to Church teachings. There are a lot of gray areas where discernment must be left to the more experienced but if you follow Church documents you should do fine.

RCIA as well as the Basic Faith Formation classes that I team teach include learners that are looking for basics on which they can build. I tend to get too technical, at times, but then again this is a very important topic since it is by our presentation that souls will be led.

God Bless you and good luck…and the Natural Law, do good and avoid evil is the bottom line but there is much more to get someone there. If it were that easy we’d all be saints…teachccd 🙂

just planning for 3 parents meetings on Catholic Morality
I. the fall, results of original sin, capsule salvation history, actual sin, mortal and venial, forming conscience, moral decision making, analyzing moral issues
II. ten commandments and the idea of covenant, NT on law vs love, and 1 John on meaning of love, greatest commandment, If you love Me you will keep My commands and other relevant NT scripture
III. beatitudes, spiritual and corporal works of mercy, social justice, who is my neighbor

source: bible, CCC, encyclicals (cites from CCC sections point to relevant scripture and other docs)
method: intro topic with short <10 min video clips
bible and CCC look-ups
lecture
discussion questions in small groups
conclusion and homework (prayer with scripture)

my outlines for each session I am taking from the 2nd vol of the Didache HS RE textbook Series, Our Moral Life in Christ. the first vol, Intro to Catholicism also has a good digest of Catholic moral teaching

Those are excellent resources. Your outline seems very well put together. I hope that they allow you more time than I got. This is such an essential part of Christian faith…God Bless…teachccd 🙂

We just did that this week in RCIA class. Ours expanded a bit on the 7 virtues (we covered virtues, sin and grace). One part was how everyone has at least one deadly sin they tend to fall into (lust, sloth, greed, pride, etc.), and how we can fall into sin by saying something like, “Oh, I can skip just one day of prayer. It’ll be ok”, then that day becomes a few days, then a week, then a month, and so on.

God Bless,
You could use Mary as the center of your lecture, and revolve the details from there? She is such a beacon of hope for people seeking to be examples of Catholic morality.🙂

Theology of of the Body for Beginners. Much of our morality finds its roots there.

The CCC section you want to start with is 1749-1761.

You need to master talking about the Objective, Subjective, and Relative aspects of morality of acts.

Thank you for all your thoughts. I still have a few weeks before I present and your thoughts stirred some ideas about how to proceed with the topic.
