It’s very unfortunate indeed.
I guess depends on how much people would want to learn about other faiths and groups outside the Roman Catholic Church. To tell you the truth 2-3 years ago I wouldn’t have known any better. Although I did know for a while that the Orthodox are “somewhat like Catholics but not under Rome,” that is the entire extent of my knowledge back then.
Baptized Christians be they Orthodox or protestant are not converts. In the case of protestants they are Christians preparing for full reception which can happen at any time but *according to the National Statutes should not happen during the Easter Vigil *which is to be reserved for only the catechumens (who by that point are the “Elect”). In the case of the Orthodox they are Christians from a sister Church who may be preparing if necessary, for a simple procession of faith and reception of Holy Eucharist which can happen at any Mass it also should not be during the Easter Vigil.

See page 363 for paragraph 2 of the National Statutes for the Catechumenate. Approved by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Confirmed by Congregation of Divine Worship.
Sorry, I’m not using the term technically but how its just used loosely in casual conversation. And I guess its the lack of knowledge of this fact that tends to guide people down the mistaken path. I would have to ask though how involved the parish pastos is in these kinds of situations because he would have surely known what the Orthodox faith is all about and would definitely not recommend that an Orthodox joining the Catholic Church does not need to go through RCIA.
That is a scary thought that they would be unaware of Orthodox as members of the Christian faith.
I meant they would consider the Orthodox more like Protestants rather than people who share the same faith but not in communion with the Pope. I’ve already have two experiences in as many weeks when I tried to share Eastern Catholicism with someone and have been met with a reaction as if Eastern Catholicism and Orthodoxy is a completely different religion.
