My husband and I are going through RCIA this fall and plan on being baptized together, with our daughter who will be 15 months, and our newborn who is due early in April. What is appropriate attire to wear as an adult? I have attended a few infant baptisms as well, and the children wear white gowns–does it have to meet any specific qualifications? Thank you for your insight.
 
You need to ask your RCIA director as the practices vary somewhat by parish. Some will have robes for you. Does your parish baptize by immersion or infusion(pouring)?
 
It will all depend on the parish so ask your RCIA team what is the tradition in yours.

Part of the Baptism rite is the Presentation of the White Garment. In our parish that means that the person is baptized in regular coloured clothes and the newly baptized is really ‘presented’ the garment and then goes off to dress or be dressed (in the case of a baby). If it’s not an immersion baptism, adults or older children are simply clothed in albs (the white garment worn by priests and/or altar servers) over their own clothes, unless they’ve opted to purchase their own white garment. If they’ve bought their own or if they are baptized by immersion, they go off to change and return to the assembly after they are dressed.
 
We do the same. Adults wear normal clothes for the baptism and then put on an alb afterward. We provide the albs so it’s not something the Elect need to worry about (other than showing up on the appropriate day to try them on).
