I got an E-Mail from my Parish’s RCIA leader, and they said that I need a sponsor/godparent for the Rite of Election. However, I know no one at my Parish to ask.

I originally was going to ask my Grandpa, but I don’t know if he would be able to come to every RCIA class, and I don’t know if he would be able to come to the Rite of Election. I would need to call him/e-mail him, and I don’t know how much time I have to contact the RCIA leader.

What should I do?

If you don’t have a Catholic sponsor of your own (or if your sponsor can’t make a particular event) then you should ask your RCIA leader if he/she can provide a sponsor or a stand-in for you.

If you don’t know anyone at your current parish (or a nearby parish) then maybe it would be best if the parish provides a sponsor for you.

a) Your grandfather can be your sponsor without attending RCIA sessions or the Rite of Election. If he is a Catholic and you want him to be your sponsor, ask him.

b) Someone else from RCIA can stand up with you at the Rite of Election if he cannot be there.

c) Even if your grandfather could not make it to Confirmation, he could still be your sponsor as canon law allows for proxy.

When I went through the RCIA process, I didn’t really know anybody to ask either, so the church found a Sponsor for me. As I understand it, this is fairly common. You might want to consider asking your RCIA leader if they can find someone for you.

I went through with my sister as my RCIA sponsor. She could only make it to my Rite of Welcome and my confirmation. One of my classmates had a proxy for the former. As long as he can get the paper signed that he’s a Catholic in good standing your Grandpa should be able to be your sponsor.

Yes, my Grandpa is a Catholic. However, he is from out of state, and would have to drive two hours to my house.

I think he attends Mass every Sunday. He is also a reader in his church.

That’s not a hindrance. Listen to 1ke.

If he is able, he would probably be honored and happy to do so. If not, ask your RCIA team. This is a very common situation.
