Hello! I was asked to sponsor a candidate in our RCIA class a little after the class was already underway. I’ve met with the candidate individually to get to know her but since our pairing she has not attended many of the classes or the Sunday opening of the word (our parish sends out the RCIA class during mass). I think her heart is very willing and know she has a tough schedule, but I’m a bit concerned about whether she is learning all that she needs to.

My question is regarding the rite of election and sending this weekend where it seems as though the sponsors are meant to affirm this persons intentions and preparedness, I am worried about doing this when I don’t actually know due to her many absences but I also don’t want to dissuade her. Any thought would be very helpful!

Have you addressed her lack of attendance with her, or the RCIA instructor?

Yes. The instructor and I have been in frequent communication with each other and with her. The instructor just seems happy that her heart is in the right place, which is good of course.

We encourage Sponsors to attend RCIA with their candidates. We even took RCIA to one candidate who couldn’t physically attend due to an injury. If she wants to continue and the instructor feels she is in the right place, I’d be at ease. It’s a life long learning process that doesn’t end at the Easter Vigil. Mystagogy is a time of learning and applying. I was fortunate that I went into a Bible Study right after the Vigil.
