I’m on the road to confirmation in the next month or so, and I have to choose a sponsor. When my RCIA Director asked me if I had anyone in mind, I in fact had her and her husband in mind. Can I ask them to be my sponsor, or is that not customary?

I don’t see why would couldn’t back many years ago when I went through the process there was someone in my group that asked the Director and he agreed

Having said that make sure that whomever you pick is someone you really trust by that I mean the person I asked turned out to have very little to offer looking back … I was baptized and then a month later he left the Church never to be seen again , mind you that was back when RCIA was about six months long whereas now at least in my area it’s up to two years

Good luck

You can certainly ask, but keep in mind that the director may say no. As a rule of thumb in my parish, the RCIA team does not serve as sponsors since we already have a role with the people in RCIA as catechists. Other parishes may operate differently.

I would just echo some of the comments above. There is no official reason that I am aware of that would prevent the RCIA instructor from being a sponsor. Having said that though keep in mind that as you get closer to Easter and the events involving the RCIA team and candidates become more frequent the RCIA instructor/director may be needed to do readings or be involved with other aspects of the service that may make it difficult for them to be beside you when you are called up do something that involves your sponsor.

Hopefully that makes sense. Keep in mind that your sponsor should be somebody who you trust and are friendly with and fairly knowledgeable about the faith. They should be practicing Catholics and adhere to the Catholic faith. If they meet those requirements they could be a good sponsor.

When I went through RCIA my sponsor attended our meetings with me and learned a lot too. She was and still is a practicing Catholic that attends Mass frequently and tries to live out her Catholic faith. Even after all my years as a Catholic (11+ now) we are still friends.
