RCIA: Swapped Catholic Answer Bible (NAB) for RSV-2CE

Hello all,

Recently I swapped out the large-font, commentary Catholic Answer Bible (NAB) for an RSV-2CE because my RCIA director said it was “a more accurate translation”. I of course wanted the accuracy, but when I opened it up I realized it was a regular Bible and not a Study Bible like the CAB. So now I’m wondering if I made a mistake.

Should I just ask my RCIA director if I can just buy the CAB back and use both the RSV and the CAB…or better yet, is there a better Catholic Study Bible that has the large font and commentary like the CAB does?
 
It never hurts to have more than one translation of the Bible. 😉
The St. Ignatius Catholic Study Bible is great for commentary. It uses the RSV-CE translation. There’s a New Testament volume. For the Old Testament, they have the psalms, genesis, and exodus.
 
Use both!

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the Catholic Answer Bible, but I also LOOOOOOOOOOVE my Ignatius Study Bible. Seriously, use both.

You shouldn’t have to ask your RCIA director. By all means keep your NAB, and if the CAB comes out with a NAB-RE translation, I would say get that too. Definitely keep your RSV-CE either as your primary Bible or as a reference.

Either way, the thing is, you’re reading the Bible and that’s what really matters.
 
I agree with the other posters. Having more than one translation is never a bad thing.

Like someone else mentioned, the CAB comes now in the NABRE, which was revised last year. While it is not as formal as the RSV, it is an overall improvement to the older NAB.
