I have recently decided after years of searching for the proper Chrsitian faith that i want to be Catholic. I was raised as a Congregationalist. My wife is Catholic and we were married in a Catholic church. I decided that I wanted to be apart of a church that actually follows god’s teachings and has a rich history and traditions. But I am excited to start the process now. I have contacted my local church and have not heard anything back. Is this not the time to start my journey? Also, what is the process like? How do they chose a sponsor and what is their role?
Thanks and God bless

Welcome as you begin your journey home, and welcome to CAF! RCIA classes usually begin in the fall around the time that school starts. Sometimes they will have an inquirer’s class available year-around, but I have only found that in the larger cities where I have lived. You might want to call the church office again and ask them when it starts, or ask your priest.

Wikipedia has a long, detailed article about the process. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rite_of_Christian_Initiation_of_Adults
So I won’t go into all of that, but I’ll tell you my own experience, coming in as a baptized Methodist.

We started out in the inquirer’s class, and then those who wanted to go on entered the catechumen phase. We would attend Mass each Sunday up until after the homily, then we were dismissed and went to our class as the rest of the congregation stayed for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Each week we would discuss the readings for that week, and also various topics about life as a Catholic, the Church’s teachings, etc. If you didn’t have a friend as a sponsor (they wouldn’t let you have your spouse when I went through), they would set you up with someone in a similar state of life, same age range and gender. This person will be your “buddy” and mentor throughout, someone you can talk things over with, ask questions, etc., and they will go with you through the major events and be there with you when you are baptized and/or confirmed. I hope this answers some of your questions. If not, please feel free to ask anything more specific. We’re glad you’re here! God bless you! 🙂

I just got done with the RCIA process…Our church starts the Inquiry classes right after Easter…I think they started April 16th…you go to Inquiry a few weeks then you have a break for the summer and the Catechumenate classes start in the Fall and last till Easter. You also have classes after Easter called Mystagogia. Depending on the Parish you’ll have different experiences. Some Parishes really do well in that they delve deep into the Catholic faith and really show you what it is about. I’ve visited a couple of classes at a different church and was really moved by these classes. My personal RCIA experience was rather disappointing. The RCIA instructors were caring, loving and well informed however our main priest restricted what they were allowed to teach. In doing so he really stunted the growth of the class. I had to teach myself a lot of the info and was left hungering for more. This is a rare occurrence, trust me. I wish you the best of luck and welcome home!

You don’t have to go through RCIA
You can do private prep with a priest in 1 on 1 meetings

Hello,

I am glad you made your decision into Christianity. You should expect to have to go to classes to learn about the Catholic faith. I would suggest that you use this page to make sure your RCIA class isn’t heterodox.
