Hi.

The teaching classes known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults for prospective new members to the Church have core items taught by all parishes and dioceses. However, how (and sometimes what) each parish/diocese teaches can vary a bit. As such, there’s not really a specific answer to your question.

I would surmise that more RCIA classes will begin teaching the new adjustments to the Roman Missal, come Advent of 2011.

I don’t know about exciting and new, but I recently changed our curriculum. I noticed that while we were distributing great materials, they were not being read or they went over the class’s head. We distribute the following books the first night of classs reference them heavily during lectures (homework):
  1. Catholocism for Dummies. It may be light, but it is very orthodox and everyone in class will actually read it! Also, Fr. Trigillio is a local priest and I love that guy.
  2. This is our Faith. A bit meatier, but I hope that the class is able to retain the information after reading CFD and hearing my lecture on a topic. As a bonus, it contains references directly to the CCC.
  3. CCC. What can I say, this is a fairly comprehensive work. I always reference the current topic to the corresponding CCC chapters. I like to train new Catholics to go to the source when they have questions.
  4. Bible (NAB but probably NRV-CE next year). Solves the fallacy that Catholics don’t read the bible the first night!

You might want to make the following available to your class:

alabamacatholicresources.com

It’s full of free .mp3 audio files of good, solid, orthodox Catholic talks that they can download.

There’s also a page of talks by Bishop Sheen that are a sort of catechism:

alabamacatholicresources.com/Catechism.html

I burned some of these to CD’s and gave them out to our RCIA class. They loved them!

Especially good for those who have to commute via car for a while. Better listening than talk radio. 🙂

I don’t care about new and exciting I care about orthodox and for my money ACM, association for catechumenal ministry is the gold standard, once you have that you don’t need anything else, distributed through ltp.org

We base the lecture on this material and use their recommended syllabus, but I am not a fan of the handouts as the only source of information.

the handouts are not intended to be the only source of information. the presentation by the catechist based on the superb outline is intended to be that.

I know of an exciting old resource: the Baltimore Catechism. Good for all ages. (I still enjoy it!)
