My daughter just told me she’s becoming Catholic. I’m thrilled and hope she sticks with her RCIA classes. What exactly do they do in RCIA and during the Easter vigil, what does that entail? Baptism, First Communion and Confimation?

That really depends on what sacraments she has received and how RCIA is handled in the parish she attends.

If she had not been baptized before then she would receive all three sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation, first Eucharist) at the Easter vigil.

If she has already been baptized in a non-Catholic community then she would make a profession of faith, be confirmed and receive first Eucharist. This might or might not happen on the Easter vigil. Our parish delays receiving candidates for full communion until the first Sunday after Easter where other parishes might receive them during Easter or even at other times of the year.

Finally, if she was already baptized in the Catholic church as an infant (i.e. before 7th birthday) then she is already Catholic and the parish might push her through RCIA or an adult sacramental prep class depending on her level of catechesis in the Catholic faith. When she might receive the sacraments is completely up to how the parish does things.

Like I say, it really depends on if she was baptized already and how the parish does adult formation.

I suggest you join her, it will help that she has someone come along side while she grows inner faith and knowledge of the church and you may benefit from filling in some blanks.

She wasn’t baptized. Hubby and I weren’t church goers then. If fact, he still isn’t, but I returned to the Catholic faith 9 years ago after a 24 year absence.

She lives too far for me to be able to get there myself (I have an anxiety disorder and haven’t been able to drive much these days). She has a relative by marriage as her sponsor.

The other’s answered your question pretty well. Since you can’t be there with her another thing you can do in order to support her is send her some additional information regarding the faith.

I found the following book set very helpful and it that is too expensive you can buy just one (I suggest the one on the Mass) or order through Amazon.
