I just realized I forgot to update the thread “A bit confused about RCIA” from a while back – and now the thread is closed.

To update, I did not end up joining the RCIA group. I was just too uncomfortable with the way it was presented. BUT I have found a wonderful, absolutely amazing parish that has been nothing but welcoming. I was absolutely blown away at how warm and welcoming the people were from the minute I walked into the building. It is definitely a greater distance away (about a 30 minute drive in metro traffic), but it has been well worth it.

I was too late to join their RCIA group, but am planning on joining this upcoming fall when it starts again. Until then, I’m enjoying meeting everyone (it’s a massive church, so that will keep me busy until August) in the church and am enjoying the wait.

So, my advice to anyone that encounters what I did – don’t be afraid to try another parish, even if it is a bit of a distance.

I had a similar experience. The first church I went to held a meeting called Explore the Catholic church. I went, and they had a slick power point presentation. The person leading it actually said- ‘Why do we believe in God? The grand Canyon! Nuff said’. His next statement was Why the Catholic church? and he answered himself with- ‘I can go to mass anywhere in the world and it’s the same.’ ( so can a Christian Scientist! ) They then turned to signing everyone up for class…so much for exploring the richness of the Catholic church!

I was really disappointed and saddened by the shallowness and thoughtlessness of the presentation- and I know they were volunteers- but still…

A year later I still felt that yearning, so I tried a different church and wow- we start and end class with beautiful prayers, the people teaching the classes have clearly put deep thought into the subjects they are teaching- I am so thankful to have found this place!

So I second the OP’s statement, if you don’t connect with the class you find at first, try another church. The churches I tried are only 5 miles apart- and have very little in common!

If you can get a copy of the Catholicism series by Fr Barron I think you might enjoy it.
