If someone prays only for the intentions of a soul, and that soul is already in Heaven or hell, what happens to the prayers? Are they “re-directed” to those souls who have no one to pray for them or does God just appreciate you praying to him? I would like to think it’s the former because I may be one of those forgotten souls one day. 😉

I don’t know if there is a single correct answer.

Perhaps those prayers are “re-directed” for the benefit of another soul.

In many cases those prayers are probably what helped the originally intended soul get into heaven in the first place. After all, God hears our prayers outside of time.

(Sometimes it’s really hard to write a sentence that isn’t filled with problematic time metaphors.)

Sort of like Wikipedia? :hmmm:
Only without the flaws and misinformation! And thankfully, the Heavenly Internet cannot be hacked - better security.

I have always heard that no prayer is ever wasted, God sees to that.

I have wondered that myself, so now whenever i pray for a soul that may or may not be in purgatory i make then ending more like “i pray for the deceased soul of (first name) and if that soul has already entered into your glory may the intentions be for a forgotten soul or one with no one to pray for them”.

I think that souls in heaven devote much effort to praying for others. Maybe they can join prayers for them to the prayers they are offering for others who are in need.

The personal sacrifices we make reparations for the Soul will reduce the time they have to wait on Purgatory, and make us into communion with the faithful, whether they were alive or dead . This unity will help us to pray for others, when the soul we need the help of others.
