OK -The facts are that they have been told the child (soon to be children) can not be baptised in the Catholic Church because they are not married in the eyes of the Church and they do not attend Mass regularly. Annulment has been explored, but with two children from the 1st marriage it is difficult to obtain.

having children of the first marriage has nothing whatever to do with annulment, which is based only on the situation that pertained at the time of the marriage, not what happened after. still sounds like your son is not telling you everything (not that he is obliged to). If they are not married in the Church, by itself that is not a reason to DELAY, not deny Baptism, but it does give the priest the right to question their intent to raise the child Catholic. Just sending him to CCD does not cut it, in fact, having the child celebrate 1st communion when they do not intend to bring him to Mass when obliged makes the matter worse. The parents have to decide what religion they are following, they have to follow it, and they have to raise the children that way. They cannot have a “dual religion” if they wish to call themselves Catholic.

My dd was baptized while her dad and I were living together unmarried. I think the priest’s refusal has more to do with your son’s refusal to actually be a parishoner who believes in the teachings of the Church (even if he struggles in following those teachings).

Cultural Catholcism drives me bonkers.

People want’ the “Catholic” but they don’t want to actually have to live it.

Someone who wants to dump their kids off at CCD and then take them to some certainly heretical non-denominational protestant ecclesial community and then expect for a child to be baptised into a faith which they obviously are not going to be raised in shouldn’t be shocked when a priest says no.

The priest cannot baptize a child if neither parent agree to raise them Catholic. Dumping a child off at CCD class is NOT rasing a child in the faith. Rasing a child in the Catholic faith is a home enviornment that is Catholic. Which based on the evident adulterous domestic situation your kids are living in seems to be a dead ringer for impossiblity.

Your only option here is to pray pray pray that your children seek the truth of God which is found his the ONE TRUE CHURCH. Adultery is a grave matter. And happens to be one of the “BIG TEN”

Look co-habitation is one thing I don’t condone it but it can still be evident to the priest that the child was going to be raised Catholic. Based on the OP evidence it doesn’t appear that the parents are anywhere near considering taking their Catholic faith seriously. Evidenced by doing the protestant ecclesial thingy.

Hi! My name is Marian and I joined this forum to ask questions about Catholic doctrine. I was raised Methodist but joined the Catholic church a year after marrying a Catholic. All of our children (4 boys) were raised in the Catholic church. There is now an issue with the Baptism of our youngest grandchild, and I want verification on the Catholic doctrine regarding this issue.
You came asked the question. Now you don’t like the answer. The answer is prayer. The Church contains the Truth not us as individuals. The Catholic Church is the Pillar and Foundation of Truth. Sometimes the Truth is painful.

My question is why to rush this baptism? The child is not going to notice any difference at this point. he will just notice how his parents live and what they teach him.
The Church not only will allow but She will ask for the child to be baptized if in imminent danger of death (Canon Law).
In the mean time your son and his wife can get their religious life back into shape and bring their child into the Church through role modeling.
If the child will be in danger of death and you call the Church the priest will baptize him without hesitation. If, and only if, the child is in imminent danger of death you can baptize him yourself without doing anything wrong.
