HELP!!!
I posted a topic earlier about this and was told that if I take the pill for medical reasons, that it is not a sin since my intentions are to help with depression and its a last resort method and hopefully a temporary one, I have read to different website saying two different things and Humane Vitae makes no mention of the pill only says "5. On the other hand, the Church does not consider at all illicit the use of those therapeutic means necessary to cure bodily diseases, even if a foreseeable impediment to procreation should result there from—provided such impediment is not directly intended for any motive whatsoever. (19) "

Please someone explain this to me, is it or is it now ok to use the pill for depression and before you answer please read my previous post if you havent
 
I’m not sure if I read your post correctly, but did you type that you’re taking the pill, or going to, to help with depression?

Because its an interesting point, but not well publicised for obviously reasons, the number one reason women go off the pill is because of it causing depression!
 
When I was 19 I took yasmin which is the only thing that has helped with my depression, I havent been on the pill since I was 23 and I am now 26 and I have very bad postpartum depression, I was going to go on it again only if it was not intrisicaly evil. I read that all pills abort “some of the time” and that seems wrong??? I am not sure if humane vitae is saying it is ok to use the pill for medical reasons so long as the intention is not to prevent pregnancy even though taking the pill could do that, the problem is it doesn’t use the word the pill, and I just dont know what to do at this point, i feel that there isnt a clear official teaching on whether it is permissible to use the pill for a hormonal problem that is causing the depression…??

if the pill causes an abortion than it seems that it is not permissible to use? even for theraputic reasons as humane vitae states

What seems reasonable to me is that if you abstain during the middle of the month, when ovulation may occur, then you would avoid fertilizing an egg and the subsequent abortion. Practicing, in some sense, NFP.
I would personally do all I could to avoid the use the pill as a ‘medicine’. Best wishes to you.

I’m curious as to how the pill is supposed to solve a depression problem. Definitely women can suffer from severe PMS where they actually become severely depressed during that time. I believe it has to do with not producing enough progesterone in the post peak phase of your cycle. They can do blood tests and put you on progesterone specifically during your post peak to treat the depression without it having the contraceptive and potentially abortificant effect. That said, from my friends who’ve been through this treatment, you can get too much progesterone. Some of them have gone more on a natural way by taking chaste tree berry. I tried this myself while I was charting and noticed a very slight change in what my charts came up with and with my mood. I actually was jotting down notes about my mood on my Creighton chart in addition to the other labeling. However, it didn’t seem to me to be a very significant change.

You can check out omsoul.org to try to find a NFP only physician who may be able to give you some alternatives.

I answered your question and I posted Humanae Vitae as you requested. **YES **you can use a medication even if it has unintended and unwanted side effects.

You seem to be very scrupulous, perhaps it is your depression contributing. So, I am going to suggest you STOP asking this question here and talk to your priest.
 
Its funny you say that because YES I think I may have problems with scrupulosity! Thanks for your help. I had my questioned answered.
