How many times can you receive communion per day?

I thought it was 2.

If I was wrong what should I do?

Also, is it a sin for me as a baptized Roman Catholic to receive communion at a Saint Pius X Society Church?

Can I receive communion at a Protestant church? Am I allowed to even attend Protestant services after meeting my Sunday obligation at a Catholic church?

I asked a priest once about taking multiple comunions in one day. He said that as long as you don’t treat it like, “I’m going to get double Jesus today and I’ll be doubly blessed,” it was ok.

I think you are allowed to attend protestant services, as long as you also go to Mass as well. I don’t know the answers to the other questions. :o

Catholics are required to take communion every time they attend Mass, if they are able. But we are also not allowed excessive mass-going much for the reasons expressed by the last post. The norm is that you attend once a week, on Sundays. But two is allowed, say if you are ministering at a mass then later attend as part of the assembly, that sort of thing. Three is the limit even for priests, and they should only do that if its absolutely not possible to limit it to one or two.

As for recieving at a Protestant or a schismatic church, the norm is that you do not recieve because we are not in full communion yet, though there are some exceptions indicated in church documents. Sin depends largely on your intent.

You are never forbidden from attending a protestant liturgy, but several teachings and documents encourage it (without Eucharistic sharing of course).

Just to offer some clarifications. First, the “authentic interpretation” of the canon that permits reception of communion multiple times a day is that the limit is twice in one day (although, if one is dying and viaticum is offered that is permitted even though it would be a third reception on that day).

One is not obligated to receive communion every time one attends Mass. Those who are excommunicated are permitted (and even encouraged) to attend Mass, but clearly may not receive communion. The same is true for those who remarried without an annulment, or who married outside the Church without a dispensation – they may, of course, attend Mass but may not receive communion. Even those in good standing should restrict the number of times they go to communion to no more than twice.

BTW, the second reception of communion on a given day must be in the context of a Mass.

It is not permitted for a Catholic to participate in communion at a Protestant service or, because of their own rules, at an Orthodox Divine Liturgy. A Catholic may, of course, approach the sacraments at any Catholic Church, Latin or Eastern.

While reception at an SSPX Mass is permitted, it is actively discouraged by Rome because of the irregular situation of the SSPX.

I think it is permitted as long as you recieve the Sacred Host during the mass and not outside the mass.

I have always understood the Catholic may receive communion once per day unless there are exceptional circumstances… as in you are about to die or something of that nature.

As a Catholic you use tobe actively discouraged from attending a Protestant Church never mind receiving communion although as it is a cemmoration and NOT the Body and Blood of Our Lord it is simply bread and wine.

Not since the 1983 Canon Law. It is now ok to receive twice in one day as long as the second time is within the context of a full Mass.

Even before 1983 there were special rules for various occasions when you could receive twice, eg. Easter Vigil/Easter Sunday, Christmas Midnight/Day mass, etc.

And if you are about to die, then yes you may receive Viaticum whether you have been to mass that day or not.

Thank you for your informative responses.

This helped me a lot. There is order and consistency in the law.

Thank you for helping me to find it.

I have another question concerning consistency or fundamentalism that I posted in the moral theology column feel free to check it out.

Thank you all and God Bless.

Keep up the good work.

My Catholic Friends,

As far as you are attending a mass, and be prepared to receive Eucharist, you “should” receive Eucharist to complete your participation of the full mass. No matter you have attended how many masses per day.

Although the 1/28/1983 Catholic Canon laws code 917 said, “A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, §2.”, it was not suggested this way by Vatican II.

In the year 1997 Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, text #1388 and 1389,. it said, “It is in keeping with the very meaning of the Eucharist that the faithful, if they have the required dispositions, receive communion each time they participate in the Mass. As the Second Vatican Council says: “That more perfect form of participation in the Mass whereby the faithful, after the priest’s communion, receive the Lord’s Body from the same sacrifice, is warmly recommended.”.”

All the above information is available from Internet. I have quoted them from the Vatican’s official source: vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__P39.HTM and vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P42.HTM

I’m sorry, but this is the current law. You may only receive communion twice in a day, and a third if you are dying.

That was to encourage us to receive more often than twice a year. And it is always assumed that you follow all other laws. Anyways, the CCC is a teaching document, not a legislative one.

And finally, we warmly welcome our new member, edgarshen, and equally warmly invite you to read the rules before posting. We are asked NOT to resurrect threads that are over one year old, but rather open a new thread if we feel the need to address the same subject. Chances are, since this was first discussed in 2005, we’ve been over this material at least a dozen times.

A).
none of this is correct.
Catholics are required to receive communion once a year during the Easter season, not at every mass.
There is no restriction whatever on how often we may attend Mass. We are required to attend on Sundays and Holy Days of obligation, but may attend daily, even more than once. Priests have a limit on how many Masses they may celebrate–which is sometimes lifted of their pastoral duties require more, but there is no limit on how many Masses the faithful attend.

You may receive communion twice a day (24 hour day midnight to midnight) if the second reception is in the context of an entire Mass you attend. You may even receive a third time as viaticum as part of last rites.

How many times can you receive communion per day?

I thought it was 2.
It is. You can receive more if you are in danger of death and if your condition worsens later in the day, you can receive again and again and again.
If I was wrong what should I do?
Know what is right and remember it 😉
Also, is it a sin for me as a baptized Roman Catholic to receive communion at a Saint Pius X Society Church?
If you know the issues between them and the Church and know that they do not have a ministry in the Catholic Church today, therefore their Masses are illicit, then yes. If you don’t, then no. But now you know
Can I receive communion at a Protestant church?
No, never. We can only receive Communion at other Churches with valid priesthood and valid Eucharist, such as the Orthodox. Since Protestants do not have those, we cannot. Their beliefs on Communion is different from our beliefs. Receiving means you accept their beliefs, which is against Catholic teaching (ie. you believe its symbolic and not actually Christ you are receiving). We believe the same exact thing as the Orthodox about the Eucharist, therefore we can (if they will let us).
Am I allowed to even attend Protestant services after meeting my Sunday obligation at a Catholic church?
Yes, as long as you do not participate and merely observe. So no receiving Communion, no receiving laying of hands from the Pentecostal minister, etc.

Catholics are required to take communion every time they attend Mass, if they are able.

This is not the case…one is only “required” to receive once a year…and one may only receive a second time in a day… during a mass they participate in …unless they are dying…

actually while yes only two are permitted…the only restriction beyond the normal things (like the fast and no mortal sin etc) is that the second be in a Mass one participates in…one does not have to be doing any particular “role” in the liturgy beyond that…

You are never forbidden from attending a protestant liturgy, but several teachings and documents encourage it (without Eucharistic sharing of course)

This of course does not mean that one goes in such a way that is scandalous or a danger to ones Faith…or all the time necessarily…but yes there can be lots of various good reasons to visit…

This is not the case…the faithful may only receive a second time in the context of a Mass one participates…this is the discipline of the Church as per Canon Law

The Catechism does NOT intend one to receive more than that second time mentioned in canon law (unless as viaticum).

It is the code of Canon Law here that governs this…the Catechism is not changing this.

In fact a Dubium (a doubt) was submitted on this very question:

Doubt: Whether, according to canon 917, one who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist may receive it again on the same day only a second time, or as often as one participates in the celebration of the Eucharist.

Response: Affirmative to the first; negative to the second. [AAS 76, (1984) 746]

The answer to “can I receive as many times as I go to Mass”"…is very clearly no.
