Hi Everyone,
I’m new here and I posted this thread in another forum and someone answered this forum might be the place for some answers. Sorry for the length.
Good Morning,
I am a certified Special Education teacher with a decade of experience within the public school system.
I have three children, eight year old twins and a twelve year old son.
For the past three years I have been a Religious Education Teacher for first, second, and third grades. While I teach third grade, my oldest son is in a sixth grade RE class. My oldest has had the same teacher and in fourth grade, he would tell us about his class and how one girl was always in trouble. The teacher would yell at her, call her parents, call the RE Director and send her out into the hallway. Before the year was out, the teacher had the girl taken from her class for good.
In fifth grade, with the same teacher and some of the same students from the previous year, her class was down to six students, my son would tell us about his class and a different girl who was always in trouble. Same thing - yelling at her, calling parents, complaining to the RE Director, having her physically removed from class and sending her out into the hallway. As with the previous year, the teacher had the girl taken from her class for good.
This year, he is in sixth grade with the same teacher. Her class size is down to four students with one of them being her own son. This year, my son is the one being yelled at, we’re being called by the RE Director, he’s been kicked out of the classroom to stand in the hallway and if he sits down she forces him to stand. The class behaviors we’ve been given are 1. he taps his foot on the floor 2. he taps his finger on the table. 3. he asks too many questions when he doesn’t understand something 4. he asks what time it is. 5. he finishes the chapter tests either too slowly or too quickly. These complaints that are numbered have not been given to us at once, it’s a different complaint every week. My son also reports that when she enters the room she addresses everyone by name and asks how they are but no longer says anything to him.
Last week, as I was packing up after class and gathering my students to deliver them to their parents, one of the four students from my older son’s class came in to tell me to hurry up outside becuase the teacher wants to talk to you and he was kicked out of class, again, and the RE Director was with them. The RE Director told me that ‘this time’ the teacher allowed the students to play a game and she believed my son and another child cheated. She was irate. I asked the teacher if there were actually real classroom behavior problems and she stated that indeed there were. My son taps his foot, or taps his fingers or asks questions about the chapter or finishes the test too fast and if it’s not too fast it’s too slow and he asks what time it is. I restated her complaints back and said there wasn’t much I could do about completely normal human behavior. She became irate and started yelling and it just got plain ugly after that. I asked the RE Director if I could homeschool my son or switch him to another day. I was informed neither of those would be options while his teacher was yelling how she would be glad to get him out of her class. The sooner the better. She wanted him out.
My husband and I decided while I took the twins to RE, he would make arrangements to leave work to take our son to CCD and wait in the common area along with the other parents. The common area is in the center with the classrooms on all sides. If there were any issues, a parent would be there. I also said I would pre-read the chapters he would be reading in class and he could ask his questions with me and all he would have to do is sit and listen and try not to move a muscle. I told him to ask what chapter they would be reading so we could be up to date.
This past Tuesday, we went to RE and all seemed well. My husband sat in the common area with the other parents, I taught my class and we left. I asked my son what chapter we had to read next and he said he tried to ask, twice, but she wouldn’t look at him or speak to him.
I received a call last night from the RE Director saying my son’s teacher was infuriated that my son’s father was sitting in the common area (with other parents), and if ‘that boy’ stays in her class she will not speak to him, look at him, or engage with him in any way. Oh, and she’s going to bring her husband with her too. (what???) The RE Director is at her wit’s end and she spoke to Fr. and Fr. gave a special dispensation allowing me to homeschool him for the rest of the year. While I know he will receive a superior education at home, I can’t quite figure out why this is the third year in a row this teacher has been granted the ability to damage a child through demeaning, tyrannical behavior and yet is able to teach year after year with less and less children. She now has three students. The mother of the other boy in the class is scared to death of who the next target will be and if her son makes it through the year, she’s pulling him to put him in a different day and class next year
My husband and I are reasonable which is why the RE Director has handled it this way. I would love to file a formal complaint yet I actually like the RE Director and my son loves our priest. Something isn’t right. My son is glad to not be in her class, but the fact she eseentially had him expelled is the cruelest thing ever done to my son by another adult. Oddly enough, I’m expected to keep my dignity every Tuesday for the rest of the RE year because I teach third grade on the same night she teaches sixth grade. Odder and more uncomfortable still is the fact I HAVE to bring my sixth grader with me because I’m not leaving him alone, at night, in a house with no adults.
Does anyone have any advice? Suggestions?
