Re-usable pads question

A thin layer of vinyl or leather under it might make it more practical.
 
I’ve been thinking about the diva cup/keeper or whatever.

The diva cup is by far my favorite. My concern about the keeper is that it is latex. My ob tells me you can develop an allergy to latex, even if you used it 100x with no problem. That is NOT where I want to have a horrible allergic reaction.😉 Diva cup is silicone, no allergies and it conforms to your body as it warms up. And it doesn’t leak.

I go to school, and I don’t know how I would carry around the cloth pads, plus I would be unable to soak or wash them out. How do those of you who use them deal with not being home?

I’m a student as well, and I spend upwards of 8 hours per day working in a lab with all guys. Since there’s almost no odor with the cloth pads, I just fold them up and carry them in a little nylon pouch in my purse. When I get home, I soak them as usual. I haven’t had any problems and I’ve been using mine for a year.

I use Lunapads, which are nice because you can change out the liner on top of the pad. The liners are thinner than the full pads, so I usually just swap out liners all day on the same pad. One could also make homemade pads in this style, with the rick-rack to hold the liners in place. I think the Lunapads use a thin layer of nylon, similar to umbrella material, as a leakproof liner on the pads.

Lunapads makes LunaPanties for that issue.
I actually used them during my last pregnancy, and then got the deluxe ones for post baby issues. They rock!

But I think cloth pads would do the same thing. I used my mini pads last week when I was having coughing fits and had incontinence issues. They worked fine.
 
Okay, I finally broke down and ordered some LunaPads for me and a Diva Cup for my daughter (she has been wanting one for quite a while).

I used to use cotton pads and when I went to get them to wash and get them ready for this cycle they were gone :eek:. I must have gotten rid of them when we moved 5 years ago! That is okay because they weren’t long enough and LunaPads makes longer ones.

I am really excited now and hope they get here before my next period starts but it is unlikely because it is due any day now!

I am curious to see how the washcloths work out because I might go ahead and use those as additional liners.

Yay on the LunaPads! You are going to LOVE them. I am horribly addicted to my LPs, and it kind of scares me. And DH thinks it’s hilarious.
 
I’m confused, why do some people want to use washcloths? Because they can’t afford pads? Pads are cheap, like CVS brand. They are around 3 something for a package.

Because disposable pads aren’t biodegradable, smell funny and are not cost prohibitive in the long run.

I love my lunapads too, but I got annoyed at the company when I saw that they donated to Planned Parenthood. I recently picked up some pads from Sckoon, and they’re very similar. (I think I may even like them better.)

But I like the washcloth idea! Sounds easy and cheap!! 😃

Auntie flo came a couple of days early! I am very pleased with the washcloths…I will definitely see about sewing some pads of my own when I can get the material but for now my low-budget alternative is working just fine!
I was worried that they would feel weird and thick but I hardly notice they’re there, and they don’t slip around either.

Having tried several pad styles, the pattern that is modeled after LunaPads is my favorite.

Some of us are actually allergic to what they make them out of and not only that they are re-usable thus not adding more to the landfill and in the long run are cheaper!

Some of us are just “crunchier” than others:D.

Yes, I saw it, and bookmarked the site…I also found another place with a very good photo of a pad holder that snaps around, that I might make for myself to hold the cloths; basically just a liner-thingy with pockets at either end, more for the security than anything, because I think with the waterproof liner things would slide around more.
At any rate, I feel like I have made a good decision for myself and the world in general.

Right-on!
The pocket style might work for you if you are going to keep on with the washcloths. But you can also cut the cloths into shaped pads instead of folding them or whatever you are doing.

I’ll read the links you posted, but I took an Always pad out and smelled it, it had no scent at all. Literally.

That’s interesting about the non-biodegradable part. I looked it up and there are some pads that are non-biodegradable and some that are. “Always” aren’t biodegradable, that’s disappointing. But that’s an excellent point Patience.

Well, as far as the cost, it’s a few bucks so for me it’s cheap. Internet access is much more money so, if I wanted to really save I would get rid of the internet, but yeah, I agree with you, there are people who want to save every penny possible because for what one person can afford, another person can’t.

I just can’t imagine using washcloths are that nice smelling because they don’t have that order trap weave that pads have. Plus, I would want to put it in a separate wash separate from my other clothes since it would be all, well, you know. But then that would be extra water to run a wash, and that also costs money to do a separate load so to me, that’s not cost prohibitve in the long for some people either.

I guess it’s all a matter of personal opinon, but I will certainly read the links you posted. I will keep an open mind and I will read it later when I get a chance ( I have to go out right now).

The smell I was referring to is the smell that results from the chemical reaction between the absorbent materials in the pads themselves, the bleach used to make them white and pretty, the plastic backing and the menstrual fluid.
As for the smell with cloth- there is none, because there is nothing adverse for it to react to.

As for a separate wash- why? People mention that all the time, that they would have to have a separate wash, which isn’t true. There is nothing nasty about the pads, and nothing from the pads gets on anything else. The rinse bucket that the pads sit in takes care of anything that may come out of the pads.

But to each their own. But don’t knock it til you try it.

Yeah, I’ve never had a problem. I give mine a quick rinse, toss them in the soak pot, and wash them with jeans or towels. It’s really easy.
