If i were faced with such a terrible situation, which i pray to God i never would be, i think that, considering(in your scenario) that there are only two options which are unavoidable, it would be logical to avoid the 5 and go for the one, because i think that it is important to save as many people as possible…it’s certainly not an easy choice to make, and to be under such pressure i would not judge someone if they made the wrong choice, because i’m sure they’d be beating themselves up about it for the rest of their life, and dieing inside also…
another question comes to mind, if you were the one person on the track, would you rather die to save the other 5?
as for whether i would choose the pope and 4 cardinals over a criminal…well, when i think about it, i might choose to save the one who is not as likely to make it to heaven, and go for the ones most likely to go to heaven…and personally i’d be praying the whole time for a miracle…
it’s not such a hard thing to think about when you’re not actually faced with it, so if i were actually faced with it i can’t say i know what i would do…but what’s important to remember is this - in such a circumstance, you would not be guilty of sin, it is a sin to kill when we have the intention to kill, but not when there is no choice or if it is accidental,
i know you’re not Catholic, but you seem to want to know about our faith, and many other things it seems, and so i just wanted to make a book recommendation for really knowing what we believe(for example, confession is not a “get out of jail free” card, if you commit a sin with the intention of just confessing it later…you won’t be forgiven, that is what we call an invalid confession, you have to truly repent of your sins, and truly regret them, because otherwise you cannot be freed from something you are still holding onto)
though the book doesn’t give all the teachings of the church, but it is still a great explanation of what we believe, i think you might find it helpful(free to read online) -
