Should a Catholic read this book? I just received it, is it good?

"There are countless millions of Christians who will not accept anything, even Christ, from the Catholic Church…
…It is a good thing He is being brought to them by Churches they are willing to listen to"-Vatican2

It brought me to my knees in a time when I decided I’d investigate the non-sensical cult that is Christianty.

As Peter Kreeft says, every Christian should read this book six times.

Beautiful book by a giften human being. Read it! When done, read it again.

Fer shizzle.
Honestly, if you aren’t familiar with Catholicism, or Christianity for that matter, I would read it even BEFORE the bible and the catechism. Think of it as a prep course, so to speak.
that lewis, he’s one smart cookie.
I’ll forgive him being an anglican.😛

It was his books that started me on my path to Rome. As for his remaining outside the Catholic church, I think of him as a soldier that stayed behind to guide others to safety. He is most certainly one of the souls that I remember in prayer.

Paul

I have it on CD
it was originally done as a serries of radio programs IIRC
listening to it seems the best (to me) 👍

Fantastic book. It was one of the first books I read upon returning from the abyss of agnosticism (practical atheism). When I started to read this book, I only really had one simple belief: that God exists. This book helped me immensely. Let’s just say it started me on quite a spiritual journey–along with the Confessions of St. Augustine, Frank Sheed’s Theology for Beginners, and then Archbishop Chaput’s Living the Catholic Faith: Rediscovering the Basics.

And so in tune with God. That’s what always jumps out at me from his writings.

Heck, he was more “Catholic” than most Catholics, if we accept the polling data on Catholics.

His spiritual autobiography “Surprised by Joy” helped bring me back from the abyss. I love that book, and I think everybody will identify with what he calls “Joy” and say “Yes, I’ve felt that too! I know what he’s talking about!”

It’s kind of cute that when born-again Evangelicals speculate about Lewis’ spiritual path, they say that he was very close to becoming a born-again, Bible-believing Christian. And when Catholics speak of him they say that he was on his way to becoming Catholic and surely would have sought communion with the Church had he not died so young (he was only 65).
