As Catholics, we need to make sure we arent just praying the rosary. we also need to focus on reading the Scriptures, as the Church Fathers did. A good short reading that I recommend as far as the Church Fathers go, is St. Antony of the Desert, a writing that is one by St. Athenasius. St. Antony is the father of monasticism and is regarded as a great “Desert Father”. He was well equipped and quoted scripture non-stop during his instructions to others as well as his long battles and temptations with the devil and his minions.

Whatever gets us into reading Scripture is good. I use the daily Mass readings.

What is also necessary is a basic understanding of the history of the Bible and its “characters”. I knew a group of devout Catholic women who didn’t even know that Moses lived long before King David! So, understanding some basics and have a good concordance handy is also a good idea, IMHO.

I agree!

I think it’s important to study the Scriptures and perhaps even more important to pray with the Scriptures. The ancient practice of lectio divina is an excellent way to do this though sadly it’s not mentioned very often in traditionalist circles.
