Wisdom 12:3-6
For those ancient inhabitants of thy holy land, whom thou didst abhor, because they did works hateful to thee by their sorceries, and wicked sacrifices, and those merciless murderers of children, and eaters of men’s bowels, and devourers of blood from the midst of thy consecration, and those parents sacrificing with their own hands helpless souls, it was thy will to destroy by the own hands of our parents.

Wow, could this is a pretty clear message for today. These “murderers of children” are described as cannibals, and God promises to “abhor” and “destroy” them.
 
Hmm. I overlooked this verse I guess. I could use this for my witness at my CRHP

No, initially we use the NAB, but over a year ago I started using the Douay-Rheims Challoner text. I thoroughly enjoy the D-R and recommend it over any English Bible.
 
I agree, some may find the language outdated, but hey, it’s a millenia-old text, it’s not supposed to read like it was written last year by a college student!
 
Great verse - there is so much amazing doctrine in the book of Wisdom. Thank you for sharing this.

Abortion is “THE” critical moral issue of our generation. I believe God is calling us, each of us, to stand up for the innocent lives being murdered each year in the name of “free choice”.

We failed, as a socieity, on this issue in the most recent Presidential election - we need to pray now for a change in heart in the new administration on this issue (and other issues regarding the sanctity of life) and continue to work towards a reform of the laws which currently leave our children unprotected.

How do you figure this passage refers specifically to abortion (murder of the unborn) and not to children who are already born?

Does it matter?

Ins’t it that killing the unborn and the born…is still murder?

If you come to think of it…it’s more gruesome to kill somebody who is not protected by the law of the land than those who are.

Killing an individual is wrong…much more the unborn. I would like to see someone defend that killing a baby isn’t wrong. Sadly, I haven’t heard anyone defend this position.

Maybe I should tell you the story of how I became aware of this Bible passage. Several weeks ago, me and my mom were participating in a nation-wide prayer call to stop the Freedom of Choice Act. We spent three hours over the course of three days in eucharistic adoration at our church.

I had always been told that you could pray to God over the Bible and ask him to guide you to a passage he would want you to read when you open the Bible at random. I had always believed this to be possible, but I had never had any experiance of it happening, until that day when my mom tried it, and opened right to Wisdom chapter 12.

It’s funny how after three days of praying for the unborn, we happened upon a passage that seems to scream our disgust for those who practice abortions. If you still have your doubts about the passage or don’t believe my story, I won’t think any less of you; one can’t be too careful. But I’m convinced that God spoke to us on that day. 👍

Don’t misunderstand me. I am Catholic and absolutely against abortion. I just think its a bit misleading to say this passage is specifically about abortion when it may not be. Yes killing the unborn and the born are dreadful crimes and sins but we have to be careful about our own private interpretations of passages. The thread title says “read what the Bible has to say about abortion” but I do not believe that passage is specifically about that.
 
The problem is, God kills children too.

For example, in the story of Moses he kills all the first born sons. That had to have included children and freshly born babies.

Then there’s His wiping out of Sodom and Gamoorah.

Then there’s the great flood.
 
The KJV had the “Apocrypha” up til the 1800s, as I recall.

I, too, am praying for a conversion of heart for Obama. I’m also praying for the abortioners’ souls.

I would say that’s a pretty good description of a baby a few weeks or months old.

By the way you don’t have to look for scripture verses which may or may not apply when you already have the Fifth Commandment: You shall not kill. That covers all unlawful killings from the unborn to the born.
