Hello,
I was wondering how the person who reads the liturgy was determined for each Sunday. Thanks!

In our parish, it is done by roster. For those extra Masses which occur outside of the rostered Sundays, the priest or an acolyte will ask one of the readers who attends the Mass to do the readings.

In my parish, the lector coordinator is always “scouting” for readers. If she gets to know a parishiner who is reliable and responsible she asks them if they are willing to be a lector. If the person agrees, she meets with them for about an hour and trains them about how to properly conduct the readings during Mass. She then has them “practice” during weekday Masses and then the new lector is placed on the lector schedule for Sunday Masses.

If you are interested in becoming a lector, I’m sure it’s just a matter of letting the Lector coordinator, or whomever has this role in your parish, know. I’m sure they will be excited to have a new lector!

In our parish the volunteer readers (after they have been trained) give the parish secretary a list of their available times, and she makes up a schedule.

In my parish, people interested in being a reader must fill out an application. They must attest that they believe in all the Church’s teachings and live a Christian lifestyle. After a screening interview and acceptance, they are trained, then scheduled.
