Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth – in a word, to know himself – so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.*

With these famous words, John Paul II began his encyclical on the relationship between faith and reason, an impassioned defense of how the two are necessary to complete each other. If faith without reason leads to superstition, John Paul II argues, then reason without faith leads man to nihilism and relativism. Part One covers reading selections from the encyclical through Chapter Three.

Spend some time with this, it grounds both the mind and the soul.

I love it! Reading this Encyclical always humbles my intellect while continuing to inspire it. Acutely aware of the current philosophical/scientific landscape of today and the forces marshalled on the opposing sides of realism vs. anti-realism, objectivity vs. relativism, and physical reductionism vs. metaphsical dualism, JPII beautifully expresses the right orientation a philosopher ought to have toward the Truth. It is perfect for anyone struggling with what seems to be the conflict generated by Faith and Reason. The answer: there is none–so long as we remain anchored to Christ.
