Reading the Bible.

How often do you read the bible?

I read mine straight through from beginning to end then I start over, in continuum.

Do you do the same? Or do you try to read it once a year? Or do you read bits and pieces of it? Do you read it every day? What are your bible reading habits?

Very good, to read the scriptures is a great things to do. I normally start with the Gospels to frame things properly, then read a book at a time, usually from genesis till I’m back to the gospels.I leave the Psalms for my daily prayer as I pray the liturgy of the Hours and in addition I attend daily Mass. I get alot more of the Scriptures that way than I would if I simply read the Bible cover to cover.
 
I read one chapter a night to my wife and kids. Night after night! They quite enjoy it now, and even if people come for supper my kids still want me to read, so they have to listen too.:cool:

I leave the Psalms out to when I read the bible cover to cover. I have a separate Catholic book of Psalms. I say the rosary every morning then I meditate on one Psalm a day, in order, then I read for about an hour out of the Bible. It takes me under 3 months to read the bible cover to cover, doing it this way. Then I start again.

It’s nice that you can share faith with your family. I can’t share faith with mine. They’ll have nothing to do with it.

If I may ask, where are you in your reading? What book?
 
Luke Chapter 5 right now.👍

My kids ask such good questions too - all kids would - they are evangelizing me too.
 
Bits and pieces. I say a prayer to the Holy Spirit and just open it. I read some and meditate on it for at least 15 minutes every day. I have a hard time just reading a gospel from beginning to end.

If I go to the Latin Mass, I read the epistle and gospel for the day in my missal and mediate on that before Mass.

Do you have a Sunday missal or a Daily missal? I’ve got a Daily missal and I love it. I can have mass everyday, at my home, even when I’m not at Church that day. I love my little missal.

Oh I LOVE my missal (daily Maryknoll). It has the best prayers, and thought-provoking little paragraphs at the very beginning before the introit that explain the readings, etc. I read it at home too. I have another missal that has a sentence or two from the Imitation of Christ every day. I don’t know how I lived without it. 😃

Nice to hear that people sit down with the family and read the Bible, that is excellent
 
I have read different translations of the Bible cover to cover using the one year plan of 3 chapters a day plus 5 on Sunday.
I am most likely now to read the passage that is part of the Office of Readings first thing in the morning.
It has been a while since I wrote in my journal. My spiritual director suggested *Lectio Divina *, and using that single verse as the first sentence of my daily entry.
Of course every time you read the daily readings from the missal, you are reading the scriptures contained in the Bible.

Are there times when you take breaks from reading scripture, going without reading for days, weeks, etc…?

If I may ask, which translations of the bible have you read? Strictly Catholic versions or Protestant too?

(I have even read a Jewish translation of scripture just to get some perspective).
