For us, as Franciscans, Oct. 4 is a special day. We are observing the Feast (solemnity actually) of St. Francis Sunday at Mass since he is our founder. I know, for the Church, ovrerall, the feast is omitted but I believe our circumstances allow for us to observe it.

However, the lectionary only provides one reading (first) for St. Francis. Would we take the second from the Sunday or from the Common of Holy Men and Women (which is listed in the lectionary as a possible source of readings)? I am not sure how this is supposed to work since there are always two readings on Sundays.
Maybe we would be better off using the Sunday readings altogether?

That’s right, the Principal Patron of a congregation (when celebrated as a solemnity) would outrank an OT Sunday.

I’d say go with the first option - take it from the commons.

It’s not just permitted. It’s expected, and I daresay, required.

You would take everything from the Commons. Because we’re outside of Easter, the first reading is always OT, the second is always NT. Other than that, what readings you select is up to you or your priest celebrant. Since there is a Proper reading for St. Francis, that’s taken care of. That would leave the second reading from the Commons.

Since you refer to St. Francis as “our founder,” that suggests that you are part of a Franciscan order. Wouldn’t the Franciscan Ordo for your community tell you which Mass and readings to use?
