Sounds similar to my story. I’m one to always ask questions. Two questions that Protestants could not answer and that Catholics could answer to my satisfaction were these:

Since God is just, how can a reality with only heaven and hell and no purgatory be considered equitable?

Purgatory is, IMHO, a mature understanding of both -God’s JUSTICE AND MERCY working together…isn’t it?

If Jesus was not speaking of the Eucharist, then what could He have meant when He said this? “For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.” (John 6:55)
Yep, if you take the Eucharist out of this one, it actually sounds quite weird, doesn’t it? And He let some leave Him over this issue, and then turned to the Apostles and asked if they too were leaving…as if saying…this IS a ‘deal-breaker’ either accept it now or go elsewhere… Peter, gave an awesome answer too! 'But …where are we going to go then? You have the words of eternal life!

The short answer is that over time, my church moved increasingly to what I call a flexible interpretation of God’s word. One of the things that attracted me initially is the determination of the Catholic Church to remain true to God’s word. By nature I am cautious and questioning. Once I decided to seriously learn more and prayed for an open heart and open mind, I came to understand and appreciate the simple truth that this is Christ’s Church. I feel at home here and have never felt so at peace.

A longish answer is on my blog.
Strangely enough, that peaceful ‘infusion’ in the heart seems to be an universal comment from all converts to Catholicism, even those who used to be avid critics of the church before! I find it interesting. The other I find understandable, that they found so many answers to so many questions -consistently and coherently- that newer traditions have not been able to answer yet. [in a way that actually makes sense over time and for all]

Her father was a drunk, and used to invite his priest over to the house regularly to get soused. He was a mean drunk an beat her brothers and herself after the priest left. She’s not too keen on the Catholic Church.
Oh, her dad was Catholic? [or claimed to be] That is going to be a tough one then, though I never quite understood that people would extrapolate from one person or a group to an entire classification of people. But things that happen in childhood are not analyzed intellectually, just stored emotionally, so I feel for her 😦

I am coming back to the church after having been away for 40 years. My husband was never Catholic and the church we were members of do not baptize infants so neither of our children are baptized. We contacted the local parish and are now having one on one meetings with the RCIA director and the priest, twice a week. She may or may not put my husband and children in the regular RCIA classes this fall. This is sort of new territory for my family and a refresher for me. I just realized though that no one asked me about whether we were married in the church (we weren’t). So guess I need to bring that up with them.
