What does it mean to be American? For many, being a Christian is important to be truly American.
The most recent General Social Survey (GSS) listed off possible reasons why someone would be “truly American.” Topping the list are legal criteria: being a citizen, ability to speak English, and respecting political institutions and laws.
A majority of Americans also said that it was very or fairly important that a person be born in America.
The biggest divide was the importance of religion. One-third of Americans say that being a Christian “very important” for someone to be “truly American.” Another 13 percent said it is “fairly important.”

Really? I’m an American born in Japan. My father was in the service, met, married my Japanese mother in Japan. My mom and I came to the States when I was 9 months old.

Soooo, since the majority opinion doesn’t consider me truly American. I want a refund of every bit of income tax I’ve paid for 62+ years.

These kind of surveys and posts really offend me.

When I think of a traditional American, I think of an old Southern Baptist sitting on the porch holding his shot gun with his hound dog 😃

I would say that America is traditionally Christian, but what is a “real” American? We have such a mix of culture here, everyone who considers themselves an American is a real American in my opinion.

Exactly. America is those that have both been born to being American and/or chosen to be so. We don’t have one unified race, culture, religion, creed, language, etc… If we’re defined by anything it’s the lack of definition. Yes English is our lingua franca, but it’s not spoken by all Americans nor is it our official language. Yes the majority of our nation was some flavor of Christian since the beginning, but it’s never been an entirely Christian nation (and indeed many of the founders were non Christians such as Unitarians, Deists, Agnostics, etc…), and even where Christian that has always varied. Yes we have developed a “culture” of sorts in America, but it’s not a culture that subsumes everything about the culture of where one (or one’s ancestors) came from unless you want it to nor does it have to.
