Football is a good thing to watch and should be watched and talked about at the appropriate venue. Sports bars, family home cutting up with the guys and when placing a friendly bet. But in NO WAY!! Is it to be a mockery of prayer to God in a Church establishment. Especially the Catholic Church! Getting on ones knees dressed in animal attire or as I saw on another post on CF a deacon who was on the alter during the consecration of the Eucharist with a dogs head on!! This is what Jesus was talking about by IDOLTRY!!! To PAGAN!!! gods not the almighty God. In Ephesians 5:1-5 Paul says So be imitators of God, as beloved children. In chapter 5 he says be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, and idolater, has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God.
What he is saying in chapter 1 he is talking to pagans not to Christian’s for why would he have to win Christian’s over to Christ they already believe.
But he is telling the pagans not to be immoral, impure or greedy, that is and idolater, has any place in inheritance of Christ and of God.

So by anyone doing these kinds of Acts in public are especially in worship is and idolter. They need to be taught how sacred our worship is it is no fun and games this is the real presence of Christ and it should not be made a mockery of.

Another Sacramental began to Grace the church’s rituals… And the persons of the clergy… When vestments became popular in the 4th century. The alb ( Latin alba,“white”) was the basic everyday garment, similar to a tunic: white for festivals and dark color for everyday use. Clergy wore a long tunic. The amice ( a scarf around the neck), the cincture ( a belt ), the maniple ( a handkerchief or napkin ), the chasuble ( a kind of coat ). Today, providers usually wear only an alb and chasuble, or a combination, along with a stole. The stole, a symbol of authority, was borrowed from the Roman Civil Life.
Colors: the 12 century had standard colors throughout the church in the post-Tridentine period. They remain a tradition today with little change. Purple is used during Advent, lint and special penitential days such as Rogation days and Ember day’s. White is the color of Easter season, Christmas season, feast of Our Lord and Mary, non-martyred Saints, and special solemnities outside these times. Red is used for Pentecost, Good Friday, and feast of Martyrs. Green, the color of Hope in life, is used in ordinary time. Until this generation, black was the color for funerals and red (symbolic of Jesus will be needs to death and, therefore, prototype of all martyrs) for Good Friday.

Oh boy… this poor Deacon is now making his way though the anti-Catholic evangelical blogs now

Well I think it’s both. To me if you are dressed up like that it’s know different from the golden calf in the Exodus!
You are sending the wrong message to the laity and to clergy as well.

Explain why it’s not Idoltry!
He is making a mockery of the Mass with his own agenda. I don’t like when my priests talks about football or anything not related to the gospel in my own parish. You want to do that do it outside of mass. We are there to worship to take in the real presence of Jesus Christ. We are not in a sports bar!!

What do you mean POOR DEACON!! He should have known better and I’m a Catholic that is why I will call any clergy men or laity out when they do something so despicable. I hope his bishop better instructs him on how important the mass and the Eucharist are. And that you can’t be up there like a monkey on stage.
God bless

It’s not idoltry, it’s not even sacrilege…it’s not even during consecration, the picture and the article clearly show it’s during a homily. You’re making a big deal about nothing.

I’ve seen a homily on christmas eve where the pastor briefly wore a santa claus hat. If it’s brief and it relates to the message of the Gospel, I see no foul play. Lighten up.

There is another thread about this.

Bad idea, bad, bad idea Deacon Liturgy and Sacraments
Over in the other thread, I already said at least twice that what he did was wrong. I live in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and what he did was unwise, improper and plain old dumb.

Even if he only did it for 3 seconds, it was long enough to get his picture on the internet.

What I meant by “poor Deacon” was that his laps in judgement is all over the Catholic and Protestant (and most likely Orthodox) blogospehere. It has gone viral.

That’s all I meant.

God Bless

That’s how much the church has changed. It’s not acceptable to do any of that. You need to read the article it was much more than the homily it was the raising of the Chalice. I wasn’t there but it doesn’t matter this is nonsense that the clergy permits is ridiculous. The early church fathers would have never stood for that. There is no, no tie in with the message of the gospel and wearing a Santa Claus suit or a football mascot.

Catholic Deacon Wears Dog Mask During Eucharist in Support of NFL Team
Here is how the CCC defines idolatry http://ccc.scborromeo.org.master.com/texis/master/search/?sufs=0&q=idolatry&xsubmit=Search&s=SS

Sacrilege is just as bad http://ccc.scborromeo.org.master.com/texis/master/search/?sufs=0&q=sacrilege&xsubmit=Search&s=SS

I knew what you meant. Others would like to gather the tar and feathers.
I’m not one of those. He has likely paid for his lapse in judgments by the visceral response from people online, and like in his parish and among his fellow deacons.
We should just let it be.
No need to get all over the net with this.
It’s done, I’m sure he is ashamed and repentant.

Okay you really can’t tell what a person is saying on a text. I use to listen to father John Corapi and he wasn’t condemning the Church just holding clergy responsible for their actions. I’m not saying I have all the answers because I don’t. But I did come to realize how important the mass is after staying away for so long and after studying the catechism and the church fathers I realize that the Mass is a heavenly Jerusalem. That when the Mass starts all the angels and saints come down from heaven to celebrate the feast of Jesus’body and blood.
God bless

So the Deacon put the dog mask on at the beginning of his homily and then took it off, or did he keep it on during the entire thing ?

Doesn’t say, but if he merely put it on to get attention before starting his homily, no big deal.

Priests often tell a joke before they begin their homily. It’s not irreverent, but part of a human communicating with other human beings.

Also, the article headline misleads us into believing he wore this during the Consecration part of the Mass. I doubt that was the case, but again, the article doesn’t give details.

I find it hard to justify watching pro sports when the participants glorify barbarism and for the most part are terrible examples of godly men. “Christians” watching movies, going to bars, listening to godless music and actually believing God is fine with it? We in the church are supposed to be unspotted by the world yet we keep jumping into the same mud hole. I am glad the church fathers didn’t have TV or we would not have the heritage we enjoy. We will not enter heaven if we find what God hates as our chief entertainment. And our liesure activities for many are saturated by those very things.

Playing professional sports is barbarism and unchristian ?

WOW !

Jim

I think you’re correct, Because unless it’s putting something above God, it’s technically not idolatry, stupid, yes, but not Idolatry

Some people say that if you go too far with money, power, food, gambling or any other thing can lead to idolatry. CCC 2113 on idolatry says " man commits adultery when he honors and Revere’s a creature in the place of God, weather this be god or demons ( for example, satanism) power, pleasure, race, ancestors, the state, money, etc. Jesus says, you cannot serve God and mammon.

Now if you’re clergy in church giving a homily and you or psyched up about the NFL while giving a homily. Who is really coming first? I don’t know the heart of that deacon but it can lead to a slippery slope if we have things like this in the church. Next thing Halloween and everybody will dress up in their favorite costumes and attend Mass.

We need to remember that this is God’s house!
God bless

Your over exaggerating what took place

The deacon put a dog mask on in what appears to be the beginning of his homily.

He most likely removed it to give the homily.

Telling a joke or doing as the deacon did, was nothing more than to get the people’s attention before he began,

Years ago before Mass, my pastor was given a Ninja Turtle Mask by a child.

When he began his homily, he shared how a child had given him the mask and he held it up to his face and said, “Cowabunga Dudes.” The people laughed and he had the attention of the congregation, especially the young children. He then proceeded with his homily.

It said that ( he stood on the side of the priest and lifted the chalice).
