I have read articles and seen folks on EWTN talk about and even read here in our forums about the polls that have been taken which show 70% of catholics do not believe in the real presence. Does anyone have documentation on this? Who has conducted these surveys, who did they sample, and so on. This could be some good info to have.

AFAIK, this statistic comes from a 1992 Gallup poll. cf. [post=61501]Re: I believe in the Eucharist[/post]

Unfortunately the page I linked to at that time is now broken. (But read the rest of the thread – I don’t think we know enough about the polling sample to draw dire conclusions from what was reported)

I think that they refer to a Gallup poll that the N.Y. Times reported on a few years ago. As I remember the question, Catholics were asked what they believed Holy Communion was. There were four answers like “a symbol of the Last Supper” or “the Body and Blood of Christ” or a “celebration” of the people in fellowship. Only 30% of the Catholics answered that it was the actual Body and Blood of Christ.

I have never been able to find the original article, just reports on the poll.

I’ve heard that same or approximate figure bandied about for some time. As to whether or not it’s true is debatable. But just on a hunch I spoke with five Catholics that I know just to find out. two are neighbors, three co workers. Of the five two did not believe in the real presence and one said the host only became the body and blood after you ate it. Two believe in the real presence.

Three did not believe that baptism was necessary in order to be a Catholic, two said you only had to go to mass once a year, four didn’t know what the sacrament of Holy Orders was and that it was a sacrament, three had not been confirmed and did not know that was a sacrament either. As to the annoiting of the sick, two still called it the last rites, and all l believed it could only be done at the time of death. Three said there was no reason to confess to a priest, all you had to do was ask Gods forgiveness and everything would be forgiven. All sadly supported abortion rights for women and agreed that divorced couples should be legally allowed to re-marry in the church and have their unions blessed in the church. Three supported the concept of married priests and two did not.

Maybe not a scientific example, but who knows, maybe close to what the real problem is with the Church these days.

Lack of catechisis., lack of instruction in the faith. Too much time placed on faith formation whatever that is, socisl conscience development and Bible study groups. All good endeavours, don’t get me wrong. But if you leave out the doctrines and dogma of the church when instructing people, you really can’t complain if they don’t know those doctrines or adhere to those beliefs.

I have heard but am unable to substantiate it that the numbers change dramatically with how the question is asked. I think I may have read in a fairly recent Columbia Magazine(Knights of Columbus) that the numbers are not quite that discouraging, but they are a ways from 100 percent. As for good catechisis I would have to agree that we have lost at least two generations. One can’t believe what one knows nothing about. The most encouraging thing for me is the number of converts and reverts we are starting to see along with young people who are burning to know more than what they have been getting.
