This is a poor sermon based on this preacher’s personal interpretation on Matthew 16:18. He claims to be an ex-Catholic, in which case he was ignorant of the full teachings on this when he left the Church.Since he displays a drastically poor understanding of what that passage means in context. He ignores verse 19 which is where Peter is given the keys to the kingdom and the significance of that based on the OT. In it he says (against all historical evidence, including the fact that he earliest texts of Matthew are in Aramaic and it is believed they were written in Aramaic and then translated into Greek!) that he does not believe that Jesus and the apostles were speaking Aramaic, but Greek ( ). which is one of the weakest things I’ve ever heard. Greek was the language of commerce, but among themselves the Jews spoke Aramaic.

If this is one of the best sermons on this topic then you have a pretty low level of both scholarship and integrity since this guy goes on to say,“What is our main point in all of this? Simply this—that we do not dare tread beyond the inspired text! We accept it alone as our guide and exactly as it is written. Beloved, for men to say that Jesus spoke this in Aramaic is to tread where they are not allowed. There is no proof for that.” What he fails to mention is that his own position is not supported by the scriptures either and that he apparently hasn’t looked deeply into this topic in order to give a true message concerning it. He himself goes “beyond the inspired text” to support his own interpretation of this verse.

Ephesians 2:19-20 Paul writes to the church at Ephesus that they are "members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,with Christ Jesus as the chief cornerstone.

Now, you can tear apart the meaning of Peter and rock in Matthew 16:18 all you want but for me Ephesians straightens that out.

Now, verse Matthew 16:19 says “keys of the kingdom of heaven”. It says (of) not (to). This means to me the understanding of the kingdom of heaven.

By the way, if the “foundation” of the Catholic church papacy is Peter and it is built on that then it has to wrong because Jesus is the chief cornerstone with all the apostles and prophets as the foundation not just one.
