I know you can sign up for a free account but you must enter a vaild email address. How do we know that they are not selling their colllected email lists to spammers?

This is why I do not sign up for free accounts that require an email address.
Because we say we don’t do that. I don’t think it has to be more complicated than that.

Why would we do that anyway? That would be totally counter productive - members would drop us in a heartbeat if we did something stupid like that. Besides, why would we want to share the contacts that WE worked so hard to get?

Be real - not everything is about secret motives and schemes folks. Sometimes is really truly is ---- honest! What a concept.

Other than this Catholic Answers Forum account, right?
Other than ones I trust.

I have not had any experience with RealCatholicTV and do not really watch much video on the web.

I have nothing against them selling preimum content. I just won’t buy it myself.

I once had the misfortune of taking our vehicle to a dishonest mechanic. He kept telling me that he was an honest person. I am not trying to associate you with the dishonest mechanic. I am only trying to say that some people who have not gotten to know RCTV better may be hesitant to trust them just because someone says, “because we say so.”

Other than ones I trust.
I quite understand. But how do you (or, indeed, anyone) determine “trust” without actually trusting them with information?

Also; I really do think it is unnecessary and uncharitable speculation to suggest RealCatholicTV.com sells email addresses when that practice is immoral, illegal, and specifically against the information given on their website.

Basically, you just called a Catholic organization liars. That’s hardly polite, now is it?

And how can someone get to know the trustworthyness of a person or group without trusting them?

Seriously - this is a serious question.

A Catholic group says they will not sell emails. The selling of emails is immoral and illegal. No-one can point to a single thing RealCatholicTV.com does which is contrary to the faith or doctrines.

How about we just, you know, assume people are honest? Would that be too hard?

I’ve unsubscribed from RealCatholicTV’s mailing list, Voris is way too extreme and confrentational. I agree with other evaluations here, Voris does not paint a balanced picture of the Church at all.

If one wants “real catholic tv”, i.e. TV which clearly God wants us to see then check out EWTN or CatholicTV run by Fr. Robert Reed. Both are superior in every way, and both (like Voris’s agency) promote the ancient traditions, but they do so using superior means.

There are other matters of trust that are more important besides what they may or may not do with email addresses. I am a fan of RCTV, but I can see where they may have good reason to be hesitant to trust.

Experience, research, and knowledge of an organization.

Through a quick look I did not see anything that said they would not sell email addresses. I also do not believe that the practice is specifically illegal to do.

I get spam from Catholic Answers. Spam is any email you do not specifically request. I get spammed from CA with the Hot Topics and for Donations.
Basically, you just called a Catholic organization liars. That’s hardly polite, now is it?
I did no such thing. I asked a question that I did not find a quick answer to.

WARNING

There are trolls taking the comments from our posters back to RCTV’s website. At 12:54 pm yesterday, I found my own comments in the article (in blue).
*You should not charge for religious evangelization materials. You should only ask for donations. Organizations such as CAF and EWTN do not charge. You are giving bad witness. *
At 2:32 [here at CAF](http://forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=6942459&count =32), Jerry74383 was baiting me to solicit feedback on my words “bad witness.” A few minutes later at 2:44 he made another comment at RCTV mentioning our conversation, nameless of course.

Another poster repeated lengthly commentary from another website, but since he also posts in this thread, he may be disseminating info from here as well.

If you believe, as I do, that this is unethical, just watch what you say or abstain from posting, for you are on “Candid Camera.”

My wife attended the very first OneTrueFaith taping and she introduced me to Michael Voris. He is a very nice guy and very open and down to earth. I remember when Michael was paying to air shows in Detroit and what must have been a pretty large expense and he ran the shows with no commercials. I was impressed because it was not like all these Protestant people airing shows and having all kinds of ways to make money.

Michael seemed like a man on a mission. And I could relate because the Holy Spirit was burning in me at the time and it felt great to hear another Catholic speak about the Pope and Magesterium as the Real Church of Christ.

There are way to many wishy washy Catholics that either do not care about Catholicism and God or Catholics that are more concerned about themselves than God. It was refreshing to know a Catholic who was completely devoted to God and wanting to minister to His Church.

So, if nothing else, I am telling everyone here that I am a witness and not a groupy of Michael Voris. I am saying that he impressed me as a Christian giving his all to the Church.

I am also writing this because he seems to be getting allot of flack from people that do not know him and simply have some difference of opinion. If you do not know the guy then you really have no reference to speak bad of him.

How sad…

Paranoia and division.

How easy we fall victim to the devil. 😦

Lol guys RCTV is not selling your email, I know. When I first signed up I open up a new google email and used that to signed up for the free content. For a couple of months I only used that email for RCTV and never ever received any spam mail to my account. Finally decided to sign up for premium and have not looked back. No I don’t work for them and the only money I give are the $10 I get charged.

Thanks for the nice post - you are right, Michael really is a very nice guy, in addition to being completely dedicated to the Church and saving souls.
:rotfl:

Wow. That is paranoia at the ultimate degree. Trolls? Sorry to totally disillusion you Sirach2, but we don’t have time for trolling (not to mention the staff for such antics). There are souls to be saved, and THAT’S the business we are about. Not trying to delve into petty internet forum drama and nonsense. If someone wants to bounce between sites, that is entirely up to them. We have nothing to do with that.

Really. That just cracks me up!!

I have never read any comments made by staff, or volunteers of CAF against RCTV. They have been trying hard to keep the threads civil. However, according to the comment on RCTV’s YouTube channel, RealCatholicTV says “…I am aware that Catholic Answers has spoken against us and that there may be issues with other Catholic media (real or imagined issues)…” This sounds like someone at RCTV is jumping right into “the petty internet forum drama and nonsense.” And I have seen other similar comments as well. As much as I like Real Catholic TV, I am disappointed with the responses that have been made by staff at RCTV against Catholic Answers and board members at CAF.

I’ve been watching this discussion and I’m a little confused. Someone please bail me out here. Is it a problem that Real Catholic TV charges for its premium product or asks for an email address?

If that is the question on the table, I’ll share my moral two cents on this. There is nothing illegal or immoral about charging the $10.00 for the premium product or asking for the email address. The $10.00 donation speaks for itself. The staff and the people who provide the technology and other resources necessary to create the product have to eat. This is called justice. To be honest, $10.00 for an extended period of service is less than a meal at McDonald’s.

The request for an email address when you sign up for the services, free or premium, is a just that, a request. There is no mandate that one has to subscribe to the service. Many other Catholic online apostolates do not ask for this information. The way that I’m seeing the conversation going it sounds like there is nothing else out there as good a Real Catholic TV and now we have to give them our information to access it. That kind of reasoning is flawed.

They provide a service and they have a requirement. They have the right to that. They are not the only ones who provide this service and others do not have this requirement. Therefore, there are choices. It would be bothersome, not even immoral, if they were the only ones who provided this service and they had a requirement that caused discomfort. However, that’s not the case.

If I’m misunderstanding the line of thinking here, please clarify for me. Thanks

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

Hi JR,

Hopefully these comments from RCTV will help unmuddy the waters.
"Jerry said … There is one error in your post you may wish to remove or correct to avoid the comments going down a rat hole: EWTN’s broadasts are available for free on the Internet as well as via cable. They also have free access to a fairly extensive audio library on their site and several hundred videos on YouTube.

Another issue that comes up regarding the RCTV web site is the requirement to register to access the free content."

“Simon Rafe said … We want to be able to send email to those people who are interested in what we do, for promotional purposes.”
Rafe’s comments that a mandated registration is necessary to read even the free content, shows their intent to proselytize via the registrant’s email address and “promote” … whatever it is they wish to promote.

Websites offering access for guest’s “free” viewing, do not customarily require a registration for this, other than Fr. Corapi.

I think that I understand the discussion now. There were some posts, not by the RCTV people, but posters, that were not quite accurate.

I asked this question once and it was explained to me that Catholic Answers is not part of the Archdiocese of San Diego.

I do know that to use the name Catholic, any organization must have the permission of the diocesan bishop. That’s in canon law. There is a difference between saying that we’re a group of Catholics that does ABC and we’re a Catholic group that does ABC. It’s a fine line. But one does have to be careful there. If you’re in a court and you’re challenged on your connection to the Catholic Church you have to be able to prove that you have permission of the Church to operate as a Catholic organization, even if you’re not part of a diocese. Maybe that’s what the poster did not know when he said that CA is under the watchful eye of the bishop of San Diego. I don’t work for CA, so I have no inside information about its relationship with the local bishop. The best place to get that answer would be to write CA.

Even religious orders that run our own ministries, with our funds and our people, must have the diocesan bishop’s permission to use the name Catholic. Otherwise, the bishop reserves the right to refuse you admission to any place in his diocese. If we depend on the faithful for funding, we have to be able to apply to them for assistance. That’s going to happen at the parishes. That’s why many organizations ask for the approval of the local bishop. My guess is that the poster did not understand this.

There was another post, I’m not sure who the poster was, about the pro-life mother passing out materials. Catholic pro-life organizations provide the materials free of charge. Our diocesan Respect Life Ministry does not charge for materials. Every pregnancy center distributes thousands of dollars in literature, videos, evangelization materials, baby equipment, baby articles, food and thousands of hours of talks, lectures, classes, counseling, even cribs and car seats. We do not charge for it. Our donations come from prayer. The brothers pray and we get what we need. I know many diocesan pro-life programs around the country that are fully funded by benefactors. Obviously, because those programs operate out of the diocese, they must answer to the local bishop. That stands to reason. But the person who said that such a relationship is corrupt is mistaken. It sounded as if the person believes that a relationship with the local bishop is automatically corrupt. The person was wrong to suggest this.

As to EWTN, the programming is not paid for by the cable companies that put it on the air. In fact, EWTN has to pay for licenses and so forth. EWTN is viewer supported. Until they transferred over to a non-profict corporation run by lay people, they were totally Franciscan. The Poor Clares owned it and they operated it from donations. However, there is one thing that did happen. Mother saved money from the sale of fishing lures. EWTN is a real miracle, if you stop to think about it.

AirMaria is another Franciscan apostolate that is completely funded by the Franciscans. The friars beg and they receive the funds to operate it.

The people who responded to the blog are missing information. That does not mean that RCTV is wrong for charging $10.00. The mistakes were made by the posters.

I wish that people would not make such comments unless they have the information, especially about the pro-life work. That’s a very important ministry. It is important that it continue and that if it is referred to as an example, that the information be very accurate. I know other pro-life ministries, Catholic and Protestant, that do wonderful work. They depend on benefactors. Priests For Life comes to mind right away, but there are many others that I can’t remember right now.

Most dioceses cannot afford to finance pro-life ministries in their entirety. They have Respect Life Sundays to raise funds at the local parishes. The ministries operate with volunteers, thousands of hours of volunteers. Many of them are professionals who donate time: physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, adoption counselors, financial experts, accountants, secretaries, teachers, men and women religious, deacons and priests. These folks do have other jobs. But with everyone pulling together and each person putting in several hours a month, you’d be surpsied at how many thousands of hours of service is provided. If we were to pay salaries we would have to sell St. Patrick’s in NY. LOL

In my own community, we have many brothers who do Respect Life Ministry full-time. Only one is on salary. His salary supports more than eight of us. If you know anything about religious and salaries, the average religious is paid about 1/4 of what another professional with the same academic training is paid and no benefits. We get no insurance, no retirement, no free housing, no car allowance, no car, no maintenance to help pay for rent, utilities, telephone and the bills around the house. We literally have no medical insurance or retirement. Those of us who paid into Social Security once upon a time get that benefit when we reach retirement age or become disabled. But that’s absorbed to support us all. I’m very defensive of pro-life work, because it’s the greatest challenge to the faith today. It’s a necessary ministry and one that functions well around the country.

It is important that the average person not say things about the finances of any organization with such certainty. There are many things that are not known by the public, because it is not necessary to share them. But they are not trade secrets either. If you ask, you will get an honest answer.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
