You see, i’m writing this story and i have a character who was raised protestant, she converts to catholicism because of her newfound father, it takes place in New York

My question is what denomination could i make her, bearing in mind the city, the fact i want it to have been a “lite” thing i.e no fundamentalism and not really that devout or strongly conservative and “low church” enough that she’s surprised by many elements of catholicism

Any ideas?

I consireded, but i thought they were fairly conservative and i wanted her to be originally more like moderate in her worldview, just a more “average” shock at a lot of stuff, but still a good idea
 
Ps: When i use words like conservative or moderate i mean worldview not politics
 
The challenge is, “low” churches are almost all fundamentalist/conservative. You could maybe have her raised as a Quaker?
 
Quakers are about as low church as it gets. They don’t even have baptism!
 
I think United Methodist works best since quakers are bit more “fringe” so to speak, i was maybe thinking non-denominational but i don’t know if they’re common in NYC
 
Hilary Clinton is a Methodist. Does she look like a conservative to you? 🙂
 
Nah i meant something more average, Quakers are kinda fringe since as you said, they don’t even have baptism, bear in mind btw i’m talking of an average middle class background if that helps to give some context
 
Scratch Lutherans and Anglicans/Episcopalians bc their rites are fairly Catholic in appearance, if you want the surprise effect.
Methodists or Presbyterians of some variety if you want mainline low church.
 
Besides Joe Biden is a catholic and his view are by no means resembling those of the Church so i assumed Hilary’s could be a similar case
 
Yes, same with Pelosi.

Lets just forget politicians. lol. Can’t depend on them for anything, no matter which way they swing.
 
Maybe presbyterian, maybe methodist, i just thought both would be a bit more traditional in other worldview points, that’s why i thought non denominational but i’m sure methodists would do
 
Presbyterians (PCUSA) can be very liberal, but they still have some liturgical forms… and even infant baptism.
 
What is your time period?

If she was raised Methodist before the 1960s, they were VERY conservative back then. Methodist Youth Groups signed pledges that they would never drink alcohol in their lives as late as the 1950s.

You are set on Christian? Reformed Judiasm might be an option (but, actually, much in Catholicism is from Jewish worship).
